Dirkmas Part 3

Last time on Dirkmas...

"Now, where was I?" Fyrros mused to himself. "...Ah, yes. Mass genocide."

And with that, the Annunaki dropped the arm, turned and paced towards the forest, where the elves were still trying to take refuge. It wouldn't take long, the pyromaniacal warlord reckoned - a few strategically-thrown fireballs would turn the place into an inferno in seconds, trapping the stupid creatures and sealing their doom. There was no way the elves would survive that, and nothing they could to to stop him.

A horrible smile crossed his smouldering features.

"Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night."

We now return to your regularly scheduled programme...

-------

Blackness.

Dirk slowly became aware of the aching in his entire body once again. The pain was almost unbearable, and for a moment the dark angel found himself unable to move as his joints sang with agony. His body felt like every possible bone within it was broken, apart from the stump where his arm had been, his glubok was in tatters and his head felt like it was immersed in ice-cold porridge with the way everything seemed to swim around him like the sharks in the tank back home. Everything felt like lead - he couldn't have moved an inch even if he wanted too, thanks to the beating Fyrros had just given him.

But his heart was heaviest of all.

I failed them. I tried, I really tried to protect them from that Nibirian shithead, and I failed. He's going to wipe Lapulas clean of life, and then he's going to do the same to Earth, and I'm not going to be there when his miserable planet rolls around and starts the apocalypse.

And not even the others can stop his miserable kind. Sarah, Erebus, Zeph, David, Del... they're all gonna die. The whole planet's doomed. And it's my fault. I should have stopped him here, but I failed. Because I'm not strong, like big bro.

Pit... You're gonna get it, too. They'll kill you first, for what you are.

I'm so sorry, bro...

"Dirk?"

The voice was barely audible at first, and Dirk put it down to imagination. He'd taken so many knocks to the head that it was no wonder he had started hearing things, like being on hallucinogens without the criminal charges and double the headache on coming down. There couldn't be anyone else in the village, there just couldn't!

"Mr. Dirk, sir?"

But when the voice came again, louder and closer, the Dark Angel realized that the porridge in his head was starting to fade way, and his ears were picking up the sounds of footsteps crunching on the snow and the sound of those silly bells. The next thing he knew, a pair of unusually large arms had hooked under him and lifted him up out of the snow, and someone else was holding his head up.

"Wh... Who...?"

Dirk opened his eyes...

And there was Merry, stooping over him and fumbling for a hip flask on his belt that, for some reason, the angel hadn't noticed until now. There were other elves there, too - a burly specimen at least a foot taller than Merry, with arms like battering rams holding his body and wings clear of the snow, and a red-lipped, rosy-cheeked elf girl holding his head up, blue eyes looking down upon him with intense worry. As Dirk's heavy eyes flitted from one to the other, Merry finally unclipped the flask from his belt, uncorked it and set the mouth of it to Dirk's lips.

"Here, Mr. Dirk," came his tiny bell voice. "Try and drink this."

With an effort, Dirk managed to pry his cracked, bleeding lips open, and Merry quickly tipped the flask up, pouring the contents between then and into his mouth. The distinct, fruity taste of sherry hit the angel's tongue, which thankfully was not one of the things ruined by Pyrros's assault, and even as he gratefully drank from the flask Dirk couldn't help but raise an eyebrow towards Merry at the odd choice of tipple. He would have asked why, but with his mouth plugged that would have been a difficult task - it was Pit was famed for his ability to eat and drink at the same time.

"It's most common at this time of year," the elf explained. Oh, yeah, it was Christmastime, wasn't it? Of course.

Eventually, Merry titled the flask back down, stemming the flow of liquid and letting Dirk catch his breath as he replaced the cork. With a grunt of effort, the muscled elf and his friend began to heave the Dark Angel back onto his feet, and Merry quickly reached out to grab hold of the arm that was still there, tugging on that for support. By degrees, the trio managed to get Dirk back upright, and for a moment they could only stare at him as he stood there, gasping and shaking, one hand clutching a stump that still leaked blood.

Eventually, through the haze in his mind and the pain in his shoulder, Dirk found his voice.

"Why... why did you... come back?" he gasped, looking at the diminutive figures around him one by one. "Fyrros could've... killed you."

"We couldn't leave you to suffer like that, sir," rumbled the biggest elf, his voice hollow like a copper bell. "Merry said we had to help you somehow."

"Dirk, these are my friends Punchy and Maisy." Merry indicated each of the other elves in turn, who nodded solemnly in response. "Sorry I didn't get to introduce them earlier, but you know how it is - flaming alien attacks the planet, there's barely any time for introductions."

"Oh, no, I totally understand. Nice to meet you two."

A fresh spike of pain suddenly lanced up Dirk's leg as something wrapped around it, and he hissed between his teeth as he looked down. Looking back up was Maisy Elf, her lips set in a distressed pout and eyes wet with tears as she looked up at him like a puppy that had been caught wetting itself, chocolate-brown hair accumulating snow. In typical Dirk fashion, the angel let his mind wander, letting the thought "Damn, she's kinda cute" slip by before catching and berating himself for letting his libido get ahead of his brain, as was his way.

"You gotta stop him, Mr. Dirk!" Maisy almost sobbed, her voice like a polished ocarina ringing in the silence of the empty village. "He's gonna kill everyone here if you don't!"

On hearing this, Dirk let his head fall as a sudden depression overtook him. "I appreciate your concern," he muttered, as if talking to no-one in particular, "but you've got the wrong angel. I can't beat Fyrros."

"But you gotta, man," cried Punchy, waving fists as large as Dirk's head. "You were the only one who-"

"No, I can't!" Dirk disengaged himself from Maisy's grasp and turned to face the other elves, and this time the pain on his face was an internal pain. "There's nothing in the universe that can compare to that thing! He's an Annunaki - the strongest beings to come from the planet of Nibiru, which as we speak is heading right towards Earth with every intention of ripping it apart if he succeeds in destroying this place! And he just made complete mincemeat out of me - a Low Angel, a being bred for fighting, the same species that drove his kind off of Earth when they subjugated the primitive people! I'm short of an arm and the one thing that would give me an advantage - my magic - has literally been punched out of me by that thing!"

Dirk blinked as he heard the echoes of his own words die away in the air, and realised that he had been shouting. The elves were looking up at him, open-mouthed with shock at his tirade, bunched together as if at any moment he might turn into a raging panther and leap for their throats. The desperate anger and exasperation within him burned away, leaving a smouldering depression where it had once been as he let himself slump forward, ignorant of the pain in his arm stump now.

"So no," he said, with an almost crushing finality. "I can't beat him. I don't have the power."

There was a silence. A long, pronounced and awkward silence. The sort where no-one can think of anything to say or do, just shuffle their feet and stare in one direction. The fires in the village were dying out now, their brilliant lights dimmed to dull, reproachful glares as they ran out of log cabins to plunder and destroy. The snow fell much less thicker now, coming in mere drizzles instead of the picturesque fall it had been a while ago.

Then Dirk felt a hand on his knee, and looked down.

"Don't have the power, you say?" Came Merry's voice. "Oh, but I think you do."

Dirk blinked in surprise. "You wh-?"

"We elves aren't strangers to people like Fyrros," continued the elf in an oddly-soothing voice. "I know his sort - the kind of person who thinks that power is the ultimate answer to every question in the universe. The kind of person who is secretly terrified of anything that could topple him from his imaginary pedestal, and bullies others into fearing or serving him in order to hide it behind a veil of darkness and evil. That's not power, that's a child stomping on ants to stop them getting into the pantry."

Merry was smiling. In the midst of all this carnage, with a genocidal fire demon hunting his kinfolk down, he was actually smiling in an encouraging manner at Dirk.

"We elves of Lapulas believe differently. We believe power doesn't come from how many planets you've conquered or how much wealth or influence you have. We say it's the little things - small acts of kindness from everyday people - that make a person who they are. Things like letting someone in from the rain, or donating money to a good cause, or guiding a drunk person home. That, we say, is a greater power than any military might or money, and worth much more notice than those who terrorise and conquer for the sake of respect. Unconditional love - that's the greatest power of all."

"And there's no greater show of that," rumbled Punchy, "than by sticking up for those less fortunate than yourself. That's what Christmas is really about - not all the tinsel and presents and trees and stuff, but putting aside your differences to help other people and make them feel good about themselves. And that's exactly what you did when you challenged that Fyrros bloke - you stuck up for us when it looked like we were all gonna get roasted and our planet blown up. That takes guts, and that showed us you're twice the man than that flaming bozo."

"We know you can beat Fyrros, Dirk," chimed in Maisy. "We believe in you, now all you gotta do is believe in yourself! The power is inside your heart, not your glubok!"

Now, Dirk would not be the first person to describe himself as cynical. Probably the third or fourth, but never the first. The point is, more often than not things like "true love" were usually filed by the Dark Angel under the subheading of "dumb kiddy shit" that, while working fine for Sarah and Disney movies, just didn't cut it for the sort of person who's idea of a good time was baking stolen medical marijuana into brownies and getting shitfaced. No, Dirk didn't believe in that stuff - kid's stuff, designed to protect their tiny minds from the horrors of the real world. Let someone better (or stupider) than him believe in it.

But... something in the words of the elves, the way they spoke so encouragingly, struck something in him and bored past the layer of casual cynicism that existed as a consequence of his being Pit's dark half. Somewhere, deep inside, he knew that what they were saying was true, even thought they said it in the soppiest way possible, and that, deep down, he still had what it took to defeat Fyrros and save Lapulas. He just had to keep telling himself that he could do it, to believe that despite his wounds he could still do it, and then go for it.

Jeez, when did I get so soft? Curse you, Morgana and Baby Conrad!

"...you're right."

The elves blinked as Dirk straightened out, clenching his free hand into a fist and gazing up into the starry sky.

"I'm nowhere near as strong or nice as my big brother," he declared, determination burning in his eyes, "but that doesn't mean I have to just sit by and do nothing. If you believe that I can beat Fyrros and save your people - and my planet and Christmas, to boot - then I believe that, too. And moreover, I'm going to do a lot more than that - I'm going to kick his arse so fucking hard, he's going to fly all the way to Kanassa before he realises what hit him!"

The angel's voice rose to a passionate shout, the echoes bouncing around the village as if the very buildings themselves were joining in to affirm his beliefs.

"NOBODY FUCKS WITH CHRISTMAS!"

"YAAAAAAY~" Upon hearing this awesome, somewhat heroic declaration, the elves leapt up and down on the spot, cheering in their high-pitched voices and alternating between waving their hands and clasping them together. Once again, Dirk couldn't help but grin at their boundless optimism in these dire circumstances, and the comparison between them and Sarah came up in his mind once again. Were Christmas elves related to white mages somehow? Dirk was gonna have to look that up.

Anyway, back to business. Beating the shit out of Fyrros.

"Right," he cut in after they'd done cheering and hopping about. "I've got good news and bad news. The bad news is that Fyrros is already headed towards the woods to try and find the others and blow them up. The good news," he quickly added, as he saw the looks of dismay on the elves faces, "is that he was going at a casual walk, for some reason, so if we get moving now, we could catch up with him before he does any real damage."

"But you've only got one arm, Mr. Dirk," chimed in Merry, an expression of worry on his face. "Won't that put you at a disadvantage in the fight?"

"Hey, you focus on getting your village out of trouble, Merry," retorted Dirk. "I'll worry about Fyrros. I think I have a plan, but it's gonna be a bit risky."

"Whatever it is, count me in," growled Punchy, banging his fists together. "No way am I gonna let my buddies be turned into charcoal!"

"And if you win," piped up Maisy quite suddenly, batting her eyelashes at the Low Angel, "I'll give you a kiss, you handsome thing, you!"

There was an awkward silence.

"D-don't mind Maisy, Mr. Dirk, sir." muttered an embarrassed Merry, going red. "She's always trying to-"

"Hold it," cut in Dirk. He looked down at Maisy, a grin forming on his face as he dropped to his knees in order to look her in the eyes. In typical Dirk fashion, his libido had suddenly put his common sense into a chokehold, and had now taken over the driving seat for a bit. Really, you should have seen this coming at some point - after all, this story is about Dirk Angelos, the closest you can get to Johnny Bravo without actually being Johnny Bravo.

"What sort of a kiss?" he asked.

Merry's eyes widened in shock. "What kind of a question-?!"

"A big, wet one!" Maisy squealed.

Dirk leant forward eagerly. "With lots of tongue?"

"As much as you like!"

"And will there be-?"

"Ooh, you have no idea!"

"Deal!" Dirk leapt back to his feet and punched the air with a free arm - finally, someone was giving him the reward he deserved for putting his life on the line! "Come on, let's go! Punchy, stick with me - I'll need your help with this!"

And with that delightful little bit of dialogue out of the way, Dirk dashed down the street towards the village exit, where he knew Fyrros would be approaching the forest by now. A squealing Maisy followed hit on his heels, and Punchy and Merry, after exchanging awkward glances with each other, followed. They knew that time was of the essence here - if they wanted to save the other elves from the Annunaki, they were going to have to think fast and act fast, and put their faith in what plan it was the angel had under his single remaining sleeve.

It was now or never.

-------

It hadn't taken long to find the elves.

Fyrros could have laughed. It had been almost too easy - hampered by the cold, held back by carrying their injured and elderly, the diminutive aliens hadn't even reached the outskirts of the woods yet. In the Annunaki's mind, the simpering wretches must not have had any actual will to live. If they had truly wished to survive his wrath, they'd have abandoned the weak and sick to get themselves to safety. There was a reason the Nibirians gave up such things like compassion long ago - in the great game of life that was the universe, such idiotic concepts would usually see you dead or picking jackboots out of your teeth.

As it was, they had barely reached the first line of trees when the fireball impacted right in front of them. The pyroclastic explosion absolutely terrified the villagers out of their wits, and the morale of the tiny beings broke almost instantly - their protector was dead and the Destroyer of Life had found their hiding place. Screaming in terror, the elves broke ranks and ran in every concievable direction that could take them away from the carnage - some collided with each other and fell in tangled heaps, whilst the elderly and weak were abandoned and trampled by the younger ones in their haste to escape their impending doom.

Standing on the hill that overlooked the forest, a sadistic chuckle rolled from Fyrros's jaws as he watched the chaos his one solitary attack had created. This wasn't quite the plan he had in mind - he had been hoping to try and hem the elves in between the burning forest and himself, or trap them in a ring of burning trees and leave them to suffer as their own sanctuary burned around them. But this was just as good, in the Nibirian's twisted opinion. At the very least, he enjoyed moving targets.

The Conquer of Worlds lifted his arm-

PAFF!

-and shrieked as a snowball struck him in the back of the head. He staggered from the simultaneous pain and ice-cold chill that ran through him, and the fireball that had been building at the end of one arm dissipated in a flickering puff of smoke, never to reach it's destination. Steam rose from the area where the projectile had struck, the snow melting and evaporating against his skin as he recovered his balance, shocked and outraged at the sneak attack he never saw coming.

"WHO THREW THAT?!" he bellowed, wheeling on the spot to face the direction the snowball had come from. "SHOW YOURSELF, WRETCH!"

No response. Except for the elves ceasing their terrified runabout at the sound of the Annunaki's roaring, stopping to stare in amazement and confusion, nothing happened in direct response to Fyrros's demands. Nobody new appeared, nobody shouted anything in response. The Annunaki glared all around the landscape in search of his attacker, but all his blazing yellow eyes could see where snow dunes as far as the horizon, forming valleys and trenches of white, with no clue as to-

PAFF!

Another snowball, this time right in the side of the face. Another hissing sizzle, another shriek of pain and rage, and this time the icy projectile succeeded in leaving a mark - a horrific, fist-sized welt on the lizard's muzzle, like some kind of burn. With a snarl, Fyrros whipped around and lashed out with one arm, casting a fireball that impacted heavily with the snow and sent up a white-hot plume into the air. But nothing came of it, for the dust cleared to reveal absolutely nobody had been caught in the blast.

"STOP THAT!" The Annunaki was getting thoroughly pissed off now, his fire burning hot enough to melt the snow beneath his feet. "COME OUT AND FIGHT ME!"

And then another snowball got him in the back. PAFF!

"AAAAAARGH!" Fyrros turned and launched a fireball that way, too. But once again, the showy, flashy impact was all for naught, for the snow dune he demolished had nobody in front of, behind or next to it, and thus the Son of Nibiru was merely wasting his energy on hitting something that wasn't there. And thus, this pattern began to repeat itself - a snowball would fly seemingly out of nowhere to strike Fyrros, a fireball would hit the snow with apparently no effect, and the Annunaki would grow even more perplexed and furious with the whole ordeal.

Watching from a distance, the elves blinked in shock. Many of them who had began to run showly trudged back to get a better view, whislt otheres helped to pick up and/or untangle the fallen so they could watch as well. Like Fyrros, the ensemble had no clue as to what was going on - as far as they were concerned, Dirk had been slain and most of their kind lay dead in the village. Who on Lapulas remained to challenged the mighty Nibirian, after all the lives he had taken.

Then a flash of black feathers rushed by, and the entire village understood.

As one, they turned and headed for the trees.

-------

"So how long we keepin' this up for?" hissed Punchy under his breath.

"Until the others make it into the woods," whispered Dirk in response.

The angel had not called this plan risky for nothing. It had meant drawing Fyrros's attention away from the elves making their way into the woods and onto them, which put them at risk of burnination or pummelling if they were caught. But both Dirk and Punchy were willing to put themselves on the line to ensure the other elves got to safety, and hopefully they could keep out of sight long enough for the whole thing to work out. Currently, the two were ducked behind a completely different snow dune to the one the Nibirian had just incinerated, Punchy moulding another snowball in his massive hands with rapid speed.

"So how did ya know them Nibirians don't like ice?" asked Punchy as he worked.

Dirk quirked an eyebrow at him. "I didn't," he admitted, having to raise his voice slightly over Fyrros's shouts of rage. "In fact, I don't think I ever rememebred that part from Galactic History lessons. That was boring as hell."

"Galactic History, huh?" Punchy quickly handed his completed snowball over to Dirk, who took in his remaining hand and tested it's eight. "What'cha learn there?"

"Why the Annunaki are dicks."

And with that, Dirk stood up from behind the dune and hurled the snowball with all his might. What with having a missing arm and all, his balance was somewhat off, but his aim was good enough - the projectile soared through the air to smash against Fyrros's side with another PAFF sound. With a scream, Fyrros turned and spat another fireball in their direction, and both angel and elf hoofed it to the next one just in time, throwing themselves flat as their previous barricade was destroyed with a flash of light and heat and half-melted snow.

"Good thing he didn't rip off my other arm," muttered Dirk as he picked himself up. "I need this one for writing and pelting people with snowballs."

"You think the others made it yet?" hissed Punchy, shaking from the near-miss.

Dirk quickly popped his head over the dune and peered towards the forest. In the dark of the night and the driving snow, it was hard to make out exact details of anything, let alone the glowing Fyrros on his hill, but he could see something moving at the foot of the trees - lots of little somethings, all moving in tandem together. The angel couldn't tell if they were actually elves or just bushes blowing in the wind, but he was never the type to play pessimistic - a trait he picked up from Pit, of course.

"I think so," he hissed when he ducked back down. "One more ought to do it, I think - just to make sure."

"Oh, I hope ya know what'cha doin," trembled Punchy as he scooped up more snow and began to mold it between his paws.

"So do I," whispered the Dark Angel. To tell the truth, he was almost as terrified as Punchy was - having one's arm ripped off tends to leave a lasting impression, especially when an Annunaki is responsible. But he was still determined to get the elves to safety and then deal with Fyrros before he found the strength to blow up the entire planet. Seriously, this guy was straight out of Dragon Ball, minus the over-long transformation sequences.

Punchy quickly plopped the snowball into Dirk's palm, the icy cold of it biting into his skin. Steeling himself, the angel pulled himself up to his full height to face the bewildered Fyrros, who was turning about on the spot as he searched for his seemingly-invisible tormentor. Screw being subtle now - the elves were out of the way and safe, so there was no reason to hide away now.

"OI! DICKHEAD!"

Dirk wheeled his arm back to throw the snowball...

...and got a fireball in the face for his trouble. Screaming at the heat, the angel dropped his own projectile to disintergrate in the snow as he staggered back, clutching his burnt face with his hand. Losing his balance, he topped backwards and landed with a thump on his back, snow going everywhere as he writhed in pain from the unexpected attack.

"MR. DIRK- AAGH!"

There was a spray of cold fragments as Punchy suddenly flew into a nearby snow dune, and from then on his speech became muffled and inchoerant. Dirk was on the point of pushing himself up to shout for him when a clawed foot suddenly thudded down dangerously close to his head, the points grazing his ear. Ignoring the pain as his skin sizzled from the fireball, Dirk moved his hand away and managed to wrench his eyes open to see what was going on.

"Well, well," rumbled Fyrros, glaring down. "I'm legitimately surprised you're still kicking, pigeon, and I admire your attempt at an underhanded sneak attack. But snowballs are naught but a mere distraction to me."

"Yeah, right," snappred Dirk. "Ever taken a look at yourself?" Even from where he stood, it was clear the Annunaki was not in the best of conditions anymore. The wounds inflicted from their previous battle were taking their toll, the alien's heavy breathing showing his exhaustion, and his body was covered in red welts where the snowballs had struck him again and again. On top of that, his fire was a dim glow rather than the flickering furnace it had once been - he was low on power, having expended most of it in blowing up piles of snow.

"I may have taken a few blows," growled Fyrros, "But I am still the strongest on this planet, bar none. Do you still think that you, with a missing arm and an elf for company, can defeat me?!"

"The thought had crossed my mind," was the reply.

"Well, here's some news for you." The Nibirian lifted his fingers, which began to glow with renewed fire. "You won't. You will die on this miserable planet, which I am going to rip apart with my bare hands, and Nibiru is going to destroy Earth and take it's rightful place in the solar system. Without your magic or strength, you are literally powerless to-"

"LEAVE MR. DIRK ALONE!"

Fyrros turned. "Oh, now wha-?"

The next moment, Maisy had literally barreled out from behind another snow dune, hair flying and eyes burning with boundless anger. Before Fyrros could even register what was happening, the enraged elf girl had rammed a foot right into his groin, causing an unholy popping noise from somewhere within. The lizard's eyes bugged out of his head as he gave a yelp, dropping to his knees and doubling over in pain as his fire dimmed down, revealing brown scales underneath.

"Gonna whizz red," he croaked between his teeth.

Dirk blinked as a boot-covered leg planted itself in the snow in front of him, and looked up to see Maisy standing defiantly between him and the pained Fyrros. As her hair blew in the wind and her bells jingled, the girl turned her head to look down at him over her shoulder, a smile crossing her lips as she caught sight of him. Once again, Dirk had to attempt wrestle with his own brain to not make some kind of lewd comment - thank Palutena on High for the small amount of decency and common sense Morgana had instilled into him.

The next sentence, however, completely wrecked that attempt.

"Are you okay, my handsome hero?" trilled Maisy.

Handsome hero. She just called him her handsome hero. Oh, was that one to tell Pit when he got out of this awful mess.

Dirk permitted himself a grin. "Sure am, sweet-cheeks. And you?"

"Oh, I will be." Maisy's tone suddenly shifted into iron anger as she turned and paced towards Fyrros, who was still clutching his ruined crotch in pain. "As soon as I teach Pepper-Breath here what it means to mess with an elf!" And with a shrill battle-scream, the chocolate-haired girl reared her entire body back before lunging forwards, delivering a solid headbutt straight towards the crown of the Annunaki's skull.

To Dirk's amazement, the attack actually hit, and Fyrros howled as he collapsed sideways in the snow, clutching his head and writhing in pain. The angel could only watch open-mouthed in shock at this suddenly display of strength from the diminutive figure - up until now, the elves hadn't demonstrated any other skills beyond inspiring speeches and the comuplsion to greet each other with "Hi-ho!" a lot. But Maisy was far from finished yet - turning around, she bent at the knees, then leapt high into the air with a shriek before suddenly dropping down...

CRACK!

...and ramming her butt straight into the downed Annunaki's midsection.

"MY GAS POCKET!" screamed Fyrros, his voice high-pitched with pain, before collapsing into a limp pile

"ARE YOU SORRY YET?!" screamed Maisy, her voice echoing around the valley and her eyes burning with apopleptic rage.

No response.

"GOOD ENOUGH!"

Maisy delivered a quick punch to the Nibirian's head, hopped off his chest and turned back to Dirk, who was slowly picking himself up, jaw open in wonder. With a smile, she began to walk briskly towards him, eyes fixed intently on him as he struggled to pull himself to his knees, until she reached the spot where he was knelt. Before the angel could rise to his feet or say anything, the elf girl had placed both hands upon his face and pulled it back down, bringing it level with hers and staring right into his eyes, every one of her intentions sparkling in her own.

Oh, fuck yes, was all Dirk could think as he saw immediatley where this was going.

"Well, that takes care of him," cooed Maisy. "And now, my handsome hero, I believe we-"

A roar of rage cut her off - Fyrros was now back on his feet, and none too happy about being caught off-guard like that. Dashing forward, the enraged Nibirian reached out with one clawed hand and grasped Maisy by the hair, yanking her off her feet and pulling her up into the air. With another blurr of movement, the lizard-creature had adjusted his grip so that now he held the struggling elf-girl by the head, the claws of his other hand pressing into her temple and glowing dangerously.

"INTERFERING WHELP!" he bellowed, clearly at the end of his tether. "I WILL MAKE YOU SUFFER FOR THAT!"

"PUT HER DOWN!" screamed Dirk a little too loudly, scrabbling to his feet. Maisy dangled from the Annunaki's grasp, whimpering in pain and fear as his claws dug into her skull and his body heat theatened to scalp her. His fingers were glowing with power again, and his bodily flame was starting to re-light itself, showing his internal magic was starting to return.

"Oh, I'm not so sure about that." Fyrros snarled as he pressed his claws closer to Maisy, causing her to shriek. "This female seems to have a great affection for you - amazing, considering that you're an unwashed pigeon. All this time I've been picking these elves off like popcorn, and they haven't resisted one iota. But now it turns out that at least some of them are willing to risk their lives to help you out. Tell me, what is your secret?"

Dirk clenched his fist. "Maybe it's because I'm not a genocidal maniac?"

"Wrong answer." Fyrros took a step forward, the snow hissing as it melted under his foot. "Now, here's a simple, two-choice question for you. Either you surrender to me and I spare the female now, so she can watch this planet and her bretheren die with you. Or I kill her now and you waste your energy trying to avenge her. Frankly, even I wouldn't want to make this choice, but either one is fine so long as I get this mess over with."

The Nibirian's eyes narrowed.

"Make your choice."

-------

The elves had, indeed, made it to the safety of the woods, as Dirk had predicted. But in their concern for their protector, who had risked his life to divert Fyross away from them, they had not gone so far that they could not see what was happening. Now, peering out from between the trees, they had witness pretty much everything, from Fyrros's anger to Maisy's brave interference, and were now watching as the Nibirian held one of their own hostage, threating the angel. It was a horrible sight, and each one could only hold their breath as they heard the exchange between the two fighters, horror rising in their chests at what they heard and saw.

However, each one had a lingering thought in their heads, one that refused to go away no matter how many times they dismissed it out of fear. They knew that compared to the Annunaki they wer mere ants, not possessing the same sort of destructive magical power that would give them any advantage. Yet the fact that Dirk continued to stand against him had inspired both Punchy and Maisy to take a stand, no matter how small, against their flaming tormentor, and this had not gone unnoticed by the other elves. Even as they watched from afar, something stirred within them, crying out for them to assist in some way despite the dangers of going up against Fyrros, to not leave Dirk in the peril he was in right now.

The thought was "What can we do?"

"Guys!"

As one, heads turned. Merry had reached the sanctuary of the trees a few minutes after they had done, and was now bent over, panting and gasping for air as he laid his hands on his knees, trying to recover from all the running. Immediately, a crowd gathered around him, all of them offering to sit him down or fetch something to drink and asking what happened.

"Enough of that!" Merry was quick to brush his companions off, glancing round them as they backed away in fear. "We have to do something! Fyrros has got Maisy, and he's gonna kill Dirk if we just stand by here!"

"But what can we do?" cried Derpy, the elf with the voice like a broken saxophone. "Maisy and Punchy stood up to him, and look what happened to them!"

"Well, we can't just sit here!" cried another elf with a triangle chime in his words. "If those guys could help out, then so can we!" And following this, there was a general murmur of agreement. Even if they were vastly outmatched in strength, that was no reason for the elves to hide from Fyrros. They had needed Dirk's help, a few hours ago, and now the angel clearly needed their's, no matter what. Their bretheren had done their part, and so would they.

But what was to be done?

"I think I have an idea."

The voice, like a silver gong, reverbrated through the crowd. As one, the elves turned and moved aside to give the speaker room - a wizened old elf, leaning on a twisted, cruedly-carved walking stick, his bear down almost to his knees. This elder looked around the company with twinkling eyes that nonetheless bore a serious look to them, the sort of look that commanded respect and knew exactly what to do in times like these.

"What is it, Grandfather Willow?" cried all the elves in unison. "What do we do?"

The oldest of the elves cleared his throat. "There is," he intoned gravely, "a special ritual that we elves have kept secret from the world. A power that is to be used only in the direst of times, when the sanctity of Lapulas is threatened and it's people in danger. At all other times, we are forbidden from using it due to the danger it poses to ourselves."

"...And we're just going to abuse it, right?" asked Merry after a pause.

Grandfather Willow grinned. "Oh, maliciously," he chuckled.

"So how do we do this?" asked someone else.

"It's quite simple." The old elf dropped his walking stick and turned to face the forest exit. "Firstly, we all need to link hands, just as we do in the Christmas celebrations. Merry, I'll need you to direct everyone in who should be next to what - the exact arrangement of elves is crucial."

There was a general kerfuffle at this. Elves moved, pushed, found places, swapped places, bumped into each other and trod on each other's toes. But the feeling of excitement and wonder in the air overcame the occasional accident and mishap. And all through it, Merry was calling out directions, telling which elves where to go and pointing out any slip-ups.

"That's the way, Speedy, stand next to Ricky... No, Flora, you're meant to be with Derpy... Sunny, keep your hands to yourself!"

"Is everyone ready?" asked Grandfather Willow, after an especially long pause. And they were. Everyone was in a large group, hands linked with someone else's hands, forming a sort of choir or huddle that jingled and rustled when it moved. Each elf looked from one to the other, nervous at the thought of what was going to happen, but still determined to go through with this if it meant helping Dirk to overcome Fyrros.

"Right, then. Now, on my count! One, two, three!"

-------

Fyrros blinked as the first strains of the song reached his ears.

His tail twitched. His fire flickered.

"Wh... what?" he tried.

Then he slowly turned on the spot, still holding Maisy in the air, until he was facing the forest. He blinked time and time again, but there was no mistaking what he was seeing. The elves of Lapulas, the very seme elves he had been tormenting an hour or two ago, were walking out from the forest, hand-in-hand, as if forming some kind of defiant army against him. But they came not with swords or shields or spears, or even guns or cannon. Not one of them was armed, or brandishing some kind of magic, or making rude insults and gestures like football hooligans, as was the custom of most of the races the Annunaki had conquered over the years.

No, they were singing.

"Fahoo-Fores, Dahoo-Dores,
Welcome, Christmas, come this way.
Fahoo-Fores, Dahoo-Dores,
Welcome, Christmas, Christmas Day!"

"What?!" Fyrros tried again.

Singing! The whole thing made absolutely no sense to the bewlidered Annunaki at all. The diminutive creatures had just been driven from their homes, terrorized and butchered like pigs at a market festival! They were practically going to become extinct, he'd killed so many of them, and he'd torn their entire holiday plans to ribbons! The tinsel, the presents, the tree - all of it had been destroyed in the fires he had started in the village! And yet instead of cowering before him like the dogs they were, they were SINGING?!

His grasp slipped from Maisy, who dropped to the snow with a yelp and a flurry of limbs. Punchy, who by this time had extracted himself from the snow dune, was quick to dash to her side, picking her up and ferrying her to a convienient hollow where they would be out of the way of whatever happened next. Fyrros didn't even notice them, so fixed was he on the utterly illogical spectacle in front of him.

"Wh... what is this?!"

"Welcome, Christmas, Fahoo Ramus!
Welcome, Christmas, Dahoo Damus!
Christmas Day is in our grasp
So long as we have hands to clasp!"

Dirk blinked as he looked down at the elves. In all honesty, he was just as confused as Fyrros was. What were the elves doing, leaving their hiding place like this? Did they intend to confront the Nibirian as one, or had they accepted their incoming death at his hands? Whatever it was, it was a pretty fucking stupid-

...Wait.

The angel could feel... something... welling up in him. It started as a tingle, deep within his heart. Then it began to grow, putting out tendrils the same way a seed puts out roots, until it was spreading as a sort of warmth throughout his whole body. It grew from a tingle to a murmur, from a murmur to a dull throb, and in almost no time at all it had transformed into a steady pulse that coursed through him, smoothing over his aches and pains and filling him with...

Power.

The same magical power he used in his spells.

A smile crossed his face.

"Oh, you crazy bastards," he grinned.

"Fahoo-Fores, Dahoo-Dores,
Welcome, Christmas, bring your cheer.
Fahoo-Fores, Dahoo-Dores,
Welcome, all things far and near!"

"WHAT?!" Fyrros finally rounded on the angel, and his face bore the expression of one who's hinges have finally snapped and now nothing in the universe makes sense anymore. "Explain this, pigeon! Why are they doing this?! Why do they sing, after I have slain their kin and ruined their holiday celebrations?! WHAT DOES IT MEAN?!"

Dirk stood tall, no longer the hunched stance he was taking earlier. Warmth dance through his body, the sort of warmth one gets when cuddling with one's mother, or sitting by the fire on a cold winter's night, at peace with the world. As Punch and Maisy watched, his wings glittered, throwing off silvery sparks as they flexed, and his eyes began to glow with the same light as he stared the bewildered demon down. The two gasped as they finally understood what was going on.

"I'll tell you what it means, lizard," retorted Dirk. "The elves have just shared their greatest gift with me. Something I didn't believe in until now, something that they can always hold onto no matter how dark things get. You can take away their homes, their presents, their decorations and their food, but there's one thing about Christmas that, no matter how much you try, you will never be able to take away from anyone. Because they will have it as long as they have each other, and you will never take it away because you just can't comprehend anything that isn't to do with subjugation or wanton destruction or your petty grudges.

See, Fyrros, the whole point of Christmas..."

"...is about love. A greater power even than yours."

"Welcome, Christmas, Fahoo Ramus!
Welcome, Christmas, Dahoo Damus!
Christmas Day will always be,
Just so long as we have we!"

Fyrros's eyelid twitched. His body began to shake. His fire spluttered fitfully.

"Wh... what kind of tripe is that?!" he spat at last. "What good is love when compared to the sheer power that I alone wield at my fingertips?! There is nothing more powerful than the Annuaki, Sons of Nibiru! Nothing can match our might, nothing can ever stand up against us! NOTHING!"

Finally at the end of his tether, the Conquerer of Worlds lifted an arm to put an end to-

CRACK!

"ARGH!" he howled as Dirk retracted his fist. Doubled over with pain, yellow blood dribbling from his maw, he looked up at the angel standing over him, and seemed to shrink as the eyes bored holes right through him. But most distressingly of all, his fire choked, spluttered and finally fizzled out, revealing the frail, old lizard beneath all that flame and grandeur, and the Nibirian began to shake with an almost palpable terror

"I'm sorry," Dirk grinned. "Was that your glubok?"

And then he moved.

Fyrros had absolutely no way to prevent what was coming next. One moment a foot was in his jaw. The next, a fist in his gut. The next, his toes were stamped on. The attacks came blindingly fast, faster than any right they had to come at him, and every blow either cracked something within his body or knocked him spinning on the spot. And Dirk kep that grin of his on his face all throughout, even as he pummelled the helpess Annunaki senseless, each blow delivering spikes of power that shook his opponent down to the bone.

Watching from a distance, Punchy and Maisy decided now was a brilliant time to give moral support.

"COME ON, DIRK!" hollered Punchy, hopping up and down. "SOCK IT TO HIM!"

"AND IT'S A LEFT!" cheered Maisy, a wild fire in her eyes. "AND A RIGHT! AND A JAB!"

"Woah, Maisy," cried Punchy, a little disturbed, "when did you get so bloodthristy?"

"WHO CARES?! GET HIM, DIRKY-BOY!"

-------

It had been travelling for many long centuries. Millenia, even.

But now, it was there.

The sandy-brown bulk of Nibiru heaved into sight as it approached Earth, on this fateful day that their orbits intersected. Many had predicted it's coming, some had dismissed it as flights of fancy or conspiracy theories, but none had believed that it had truly existed, until now, when they could see it clearly from the sky. Faster and faster it approached, dwarfing the blue-green orb with it's sheer size as it grew ever closer, blocking out the light of the sun with it's titanic mass.

All the planet waited with baited breath. Some had quietly accepted their fate, holding hands for comfort. Others had taken to praying in churches, hoping that tjeir deities could deliver them from the horror that was to come. Many more, unable to stand it all, had thrown themselves off buildings or shot themselves rather than face the predicted apocalypse. But all eyes were directed up at the massive interstellar object as it grew bigger and bigger in the sky, until they could see the faint outlines of countries and continents on it.

Nibiru passed by Earth...

...

...

...and went on it's way.

Nothing. No earthquakes, no tidal waves. No masses of alien beings descending from above, shrieking war-cries and brandishing laser beams. Not even so much as a UFO or Mothman to announce some terrible coming. Nibiru had passed by Earth without leaving so much as a mark.

There was a long, stunned silence.

"Well," said someone somewhere. "What a lot of bollocks."

-------

There was a crack as Dirk delivered a solid haymaker, and Fyrros grunted as he collapsed in the snow, yellow blood pouring from his wounds. Everything ached - his bones, his skin, his gas pocket and what remained of his glubok. His fire had gone out completely, and all of his strength had simply left him. But even if he had even an inkling of power left, he wouldn;t even have been able to pick himself up anyway, given the circumstances. He had bee beffudled, tricked, outwitted and bested in honourable one-on-one combat by a member of the same race that had driven his kin off of Earth long ago, along with forcees he didn't couldn't understand. And now, he had sensed that Nibiru had failed to even scratch the surface of Earth.

It was too much. He had lost the will to fight.

A hand clasped him by the throat and drew him up. Opening his eyes, he once more shrank into himself at the glare of Dirk Angelos, who towered over him like some avenging god or a stern teacher brandishing a bad report card. Raw power danced off of his skin and sizzled where his open wounds already stang in the cold. From the corner of his eye, he noticed an orangey glow coming over the horizon, and realized that the sun was coming up, in an almost symbolic mimicry of the events occuring right now on Lapulas.

"Now, listen here," came Dirk's voice. "I don't like you. Merry doesn't like you, Punch and Maisy don't like you, and I don't think any other one of those elves down there likes you. In fact," he went on as he hoisted the Annunaki higher up into the air, "I'm inclined to think nobody likes you. Which means you're not exactly welcome here, are you?"

Fyrros blinked, putting the pieces together.

"...mercy?"

Dirk's grin returned.

"Survey says: Fuck off!"

Then Fyrros's world span, and suddenly he was airborne, twisting through the early morning air as though he were a ragdoll thrown by a baby in a temper tantrum.

Dirk glowed as he lifted his hand up towards his airborne foe.

"You want joy, you overgrown iguana? Have all the joy on this planet! It's the gift that keeps on giving!"

Light gathered in his palm.

"Merry Fucking Christmas!"

And the sun was blotted out by the massive laser that soared upwards, that cut through the icy air and struck the Annunaki, engulfing him completely.

For a moment, there was nothing but white-hot agony.

"SO... MUCH... JOY..."

And then his world when white.

-------

As the laser died away, Dirk slowly lowered his arm, still staring fixedly at where Fyrros had been a few seconds ago. The morning sun was hot on his back, his feathers rustled in the cool breeze and his wounds no longer stung him in any measure. And for once, his soul was seemingly at peace. The thing that threatened his peaceful planet was gone, never to trouble anyone in the universe ever again, and Nibiru would not be doing any harm to Earth this year. Not only had he just saved one planet, he had saved two at once.

So yes, he felt pretty damned good.

Then he felt the power dissapate, leaking out of him as if he were a colander, Looking down, he watched as tendrils of gold flowed from his body and slink, snake-like, across the snow in all directions, shimmering like the real thing as they moved. Some slipped back into the earth, to filter back to the core of the planet from whence it came, while others, much to the angel's wonder, began to slip towards the village, which had long since ceased to burn and was now smoldering quietly away to itself. It moved, ghost-like, through the streets, splitting into even more pieces as it alighted on a wreck here, a corpse there, flitting from one to the other.

And then Dirk's jaw dropped.

"Holy shit."

The wrecked buildings were knitting themselves back together. Splinters formed shards, which formed entire beams that slotted together into walls. Roofs locked back into position, the burn marks fading away. The tinsel and decorations unraveled from their shrivelled states back into their former splendor, crumpled stalls shot to attention like soldiers and the crumple tree bloomed back into splendor. No doubt that the interiors of all the places that had been destroyed in the battle where restoring themselves too, carpets and curtains and other such things springing back into shape with every touch of the golden energy.

And in the streets, there were stirrings. Stirrings turned into movement, which turned into once-dead elves groaning in pain as they picked themselves up from the snow, holding their heads. Their groans soon changed into gasps of wonderment, however, as they saw the energy of Lapulas soaring over their heads, and understood that the thing that had tormented them was now gone forever. There was a thump and an "OW!" as Rosie Elf, restored at the exact point in the air she had been before death, fell from the sky and landed on somebody else.

One by one, the golden streams filtered back into the snow, vanishing with a shimmering of sparks until they had all gone.

"I get it now," breathed Dirk.

And he did.

Lapulas was alive...

Then he looked down, and saw the elves emerging from the forest and walking towards him in a bunch. As he watched, the walking turned into jogging, which tansformed into running, and before the angel knew it he was promptly swarmed by tiny, jingly elves, all of them cheering ag the tops of their voices and alternatively hugging and high-fiving him in turn. The commotion brought the ressurected elves from the village out in curiosity, wherupon they immediately joined in the celebrations and dashed forward to meet their saviour. Even the elderly elves, Grandfather Willow among them, reached up to shake his remaining hand with enough enthusiasm to almost take it off.

"YOU DID IT!" cried someone. "YOU SAVED OUR PLANET!"

"Three cheers for Dirk!" came Merry's voice from the crowd. "Hip-hip!"

"Hooray!"

"Hip-hip!"

"HOORAY!"

"Hip-hip!"

"HOORAY!" cheered all the elves in unison, and Dirk laughed aloud in joy as the did so. So what if he'd been dragged onto a planet he didn't understand or hadn't heard of before? So what if he'd lost an arm fighting an evil alien from Nibiru? He'd not only saved the Earth, but he'd saved Christmas, and all his friends from the King of Beasts, as well! And now everything was going to be just fine, and nobody was dead except the bad guy, and he'd learnt one of those Christmas Special Moral Lessons, too - that there is nothing more powerful than the love between people.

There was no way this day could get better.

"Oh, Dii-iirk~"

Dirk paused, and his trademark grin came over his face. The cheering stopped almost immediately.

"Aw, yeah," he chuckled. "It just got better." Turning on the spot, he pushed his way through the suddenly silent crowd until he found a space not occupied by hundreds of shocked elves. Standing there in the snow was Maisy, a sweet smile on her face and her baby-blue eyes gazing up at him as he approached, ignoring the stares of amazement from her kinfolk. Dirk's grin grew even wider at the sight, and he promptly dropped to his knees in front of her, his face level with hers and wings twitching in anticipation.

"So, handsome hero," the elf girl crooned, battering her eyelashes. "You ready for your reward?"

"Abso-total-lutely," was the angel's response, putting his hand on the brunette's cheek, and Maisy gave a little squeal with delight. Before he made his move, he took the opportunity to spare a quick glance at the elves around them, and almost laughed when he saw that each and every one of them bore expressions of horror or embarrassment on their faces. Merry, in particular, had turned red as a tomato, whilst Punchy had covered his face with both hands and was muttering something about cooties under his breath.

Prudes, the lot of them.

"Pay attention, ladies," he called out to those elf girls that might have been lurking somewhere in the audience. "This is how you reward a man when he saves your entire species and planet!" Getting no response (as he figured), the angel turned back to find that Maisy, unable to contain herself any longer, had already tightly shut her eyes and puckered her lips, leaning forward slightly in anticipation of the kiss. Good. That was just how he liked his rewards - served up with the minimum amount of fuss.

The crowd watched with baited breath as Dirk closed his eyes, leaned in...

-------

And woke up.

His head was thumping like a tribal drum, but he was definitely awake this time. He wasn't kneeling in the snow any more, he was on the living room couch, still sprawled in the same position he'd been whilst watching the faeries make out in the party. The arm that had been ripped off was actually still there, and not hurting in any actual way at all. And all of his clothes, right down to the chiton and laurel wreath, were still on him.

And, most dishearteningly of all, he wasn't about to make out with a cute elf girl.

That meant only one thing.

It had all been a dream. One big, stupid, Rophynol-based dream.

"God damn it," he groaned in irritation as he pushed himself upright, rubbing his head. "Only in a roofie-induced dream could something like that happen. Only there could I end up on a snowy planet inhabited by elf people! Only there could I fight against a flaming lizard-demon from Nibiru and beat him with the power of Christmas! And only there could I come anywhere close to actual first base with a female type of some persuasion! I mean, fucking hell, couldn't I have least woken up after we-

"...What?"

The last time Dirk had checked, most of the living room had been in a state of complete disrepair thanks to drug-induced shenanigans. Tables were covered in broken glasses and crumpled cans, the curtains had been torn down and sick and piss coated the walls and floor. But now that Dirk looked at it, he could see that the entire place was cleaner than even Pit was accustomed to keeping it. The walls were completely vomit-free, the tables were squeaky-clean and the curtains looked as thought no-one had tried ripping them down at all. Even the glasses looked like new, as if someone had magically glued them together without so much as a hairline crack to show the joins.

Dirk immediately got up and began to check the house.

Kitchen as it should be, with mopped floor and perfectly whole cutlery. Halls devoid of laser burns and Minotaur head holes. Dance floor completely intact and dry as a bone. The shark tank was unharmed, with it's new occupant trying to master the art of swimming through a glass wall. Bedrooms tidy and neat, with no torn pillows, broken springs or soiled sheets. And looking outside revealed no trace of Yig or his maniacal attempt to defy gravity. Even the Christmas decorations, from tinsel to tree to wreaths, were all in their proper position.

Looking down, Dirk made another discovery. Yes, it was true that his clothes were still whole, but now they were also completely free of beer and sick and without a burn or rip on them. A quick sniff of his chiton revealed the scent of fresh pine needles, an almost eerie echo of what had happened when he had awoken in Merry's hut in his... dream? The angel wasn't so sure about that now - he remembered that smell quite vividly, along with almost everything else. The meal at Merry's, the fight with Fyrros, the feeling of all that Christmas joy welling up inside him, the ringing of Maisy's voice in his ears...

What had happened? And who had fixed the house?

Dirk was still pondering this question when, upon re-entering the living room, he noticed the envelope on the coffee table. It wasn't that difficult to miss, considering he'd had a headache and all, but the Dark Angel did wonder how he'd managed to do such a thing, seeing as how the coffee table was the first thing he saw when he woke up. Curiously reaching down, he picked it up in one hand, noting the unusual wax seal on it - some sort of deer, he reckoned - and ripped it open with the other. A flash of red caught his eye, and his quickly took hold of the contents and yanked it out, revealing a folded piece of paper with red borders.

Unfolding it revealed it to be a letter, penned in old-fashioned quill ink. And this is what it read:

"Dirk Angelos,

My heartiest of thanks go out to you, my dear boy! When I recovered you from your house and took you back to my home planet of Lapulas, I will admit that I had my doubts. But you have shown me that even the most unlikeliest of people can become heroes, and no matter how gloomy things get there is always a glimmer of hope. My planet needed an angel to fight off the Annunaki, and you proved yourself to be a whole lot more than that. For saving my people from Fyrros, and by extension Earth and Christmas from Nibiru, I cannot thank you enough. Well done, indeed!

You know, the sad part is, I always did try to visit Nibiru after the Annunaki were exiled. However, the planet's residents - the Vulturites - weren't very accommodating. Kept trying to eat my reindeer and the presents! In the end, I just stopped trying - I couldn't risk myself getting devoured and disappoint all the children, you know. While I understand where Fyrros may have been coming from, that doesn't in the least bit excuse all the terrible things his kind has done over the years. In fact, I think a certain planet's headed for the Naughty List!

I'm afraid to say you passed out right before you could get anywhere with Maisy. Poor girl was frightfully upset about the whole thing, of course, but I promised her that if she was especially good, she could come and visit you, if she felt like it. I smartened you up with my healing magic, fixed your clothes and took you back the same way I fetched you - very quickly indeed, whilst there was time to spare. I also brought along some of my best elves along to fix up your house while you were asleep - wouldn't do to have your brother come back to a pigsty! You can thank Merry as chief craftsmen for the outstanding work.

Your new arm was designed by myself and built by Sparky, the village scientist and mechanic. It's forged from pure Klausium coated in synthetic skin - 100% guaranteed waterproof and resistant to extremes of heat and cold. It's built directly into your muscular and nervous system, so it feels and reacts like a real arm, and also contains a built-in thaumic converter to allow you to keep using your magic with it. It also has a custom-built plasma cannon in the forearm - it should activate on a mental signal of "Power on", although you can program it to respond to voice commands as well. Always pays to be prepared when you're a Kobber!

Well, I must dash - Rudolph is getting impatient, and I must start my deliveries. Perhaps I shall see Nibiru pass by Earth while I'm about it - no ill effects, of course. See you on Christmas Eve, all being well! And remember to lay off the Rophynol, or you might not get that mountain bike you've been wanting this year!

A Merry Christmas from all on Lapulas,

- Christopher "Santa Claus" Kringle."

Dirk stared.

Then he lifted his arm and looked carefully at it. It still looked like his arm, and he could still feel it as he flexed the fingers, but...

Power on.

With a whirr, the skin split open, and a shining tube emerged from the slot left in the forearm. It looked like something that should belong in a modern-art museum - the sort of thing Wheatley would be proud of - but at the same time, it's design carried an air of menace about it. There was no doubt that white-hot death came from one end of it, and whatever was on the receiving end probably wouldn't be getting up again any time soon. It glowed like a miniature furnace from within.

A smile crossed Dirk's face, even as the corner of his ears picked up the sound of Ferrari California tyres on the gravel driveway.

"Fucking ace."

Dirkmas Part 2

Last time on Dirkmas...

"I... Hate... CHRISTMAS!"

...

...

"...the fuck?!"

We now return to your regularly scheduled programme...

-------

For a few minutes, there was utter silence. Nobody spoke - not the seven-foot-tall, firey demon-lizard thing, nor the Dark Angel who I think is meant to be our hero, nor the miniscule elves who, up until now, had been as chatty as a comedian on a sugar high. The only sounds to hear were the wind whistling across the landscape and the crackle of the fires still burning across the village. The lizard creature swung hus burning tail back and forth as he glared at each and every one of the crowd in front of him, the light from his flaming body illuminating the snow and buildings around him. An intense heat melted the snow beneath his claws all the way down to the earth, baking it solid.

And then Dirk spoke again. This time in a much more serious tone, fully understanding what he was facing.

"This is new, I gotta admit," he announced as he stepped forward from the throng of terrified elves to face the invader. "But here you are - a reall live Annunaki. I thought you and your planet were just an invention of coked-up basement dwellers."

The Annunaki's reptillian face twisted into a mocking sneer. "I could say the same for you, Low Angel," he growled, his voice like rocks tumbling down a hill with violence on their minds. "I thought your race fled back to Skyworld after the Purge, like the cowardly pigeons you are."

"Hey!" snapped Dirk, clenching his fists. "Let's trade names before the racist insults, okay? The name's Angelos. Dirk Angelos. And you are?"

A grin spread across the Annunaki's jaws. "I," he retorted with a grandiose sweep of the arm, "am Lord Fyrros! Son of Nibiru, Conquerer of Worlds, Destroyer of Life!" And with each title, his body flared brightly, each blast of fire threatening to start a new conflagration among the log cabins and forcing the elves to step back from the intense heat and light radiating from his reptillian form.

("That is so hot!" cried a voice from the back.

"Maisy, I swear to Kringle!" howled another elf.)

Dirk merely snorted at the pyrotechnic display. "As pompous as I thought you'd be. Now spill it - what the fuck have you got against these-?"

"OH NO!" shrieked a hysterical voice from the back. "HE'S GOT ROSIE!"

Dirk's eyes snapped downward. Sure enough, pinned by the head underneath one of Fyrros' talons, lay a terrified, bloodstained elf girl, her coppery hair matted with melting snow and blood and her face contorted in pain and terror from the heat of the Annunaki's body. How Dirk failed to notice this tiny detail sooner, we shall never know, but upon seeing Rosie trapped beneath the alien monster's foot the Dark Angel immediately began mentally cursing himself for his failure to act. If he'd have noticed sooner...

"Alright, fuck explanations," he snapped. "Just hand over that elf and we can walk away happy."

"Oh?" With a sudden deft flick of his foot, Fyrros threw the terrified Rosie into the air, idly catching her by the head and holding her, screaming, in front of the gathering. "This elf?"

"Yes!" came a chorus of voices. "That elf!"

The alien's grin widened, almost ear-to-ear. "Oh, I wouldn't go near her, if I was you," he drawled almost conversationally. "She seems to have come down with a terrible case..."

And with that, Fyrros tossed the limp elf girl towards the crowd with the same sort of power one expects from a steroid-enhanced baseball pitcher. The unfortunate elf shrieked as she sailed over the heads of the crowd, arms and legs waving in a futile attempt to steady or direct her flight path to somewhere that didn't involve large amounts of pain. As one, the rest of the elves turned on the spot, tripping over each other and getting tangled up in their haste to try and rescue their comrade, wilst the more sensible Dirk spread his wings and leapt, hoping to catch Rosie mid-air before she-

"...of explosions."

KABOOM

The flaming blast came quite literally out of nowhere. Knocked off-balance by the sheer force, Dirk gave a shout as he was thrown backwards, tumbling head-over-heels as he fell from the sky in a deluge of feathers. Thankfully, he was quickly able to recover his balance before hitting the ground, handing on both feet and avoiding any major injury. The elves, however, were toppled over like dominos by the shockwaves, collapsing into piles even as they cried in horror at the fate of their sister elf, the heat and light washing over them.

All assembled could only stare as the explosion where Rosie Elf had once been slowly dissapated, gently dusting the area with ash and filling the air with smoke.

"...Is that contagious?" asked the elf with the broken saxophone voice. "Because I really don't want to catch that."

Bile rose in Dirk's throat as he stared at the empty air, clenching his fists. Rosie hadn't done anything to offend anyone, as far as he knew, and yet that firey wanker had seen fit to simply dispose of her as if she were no more than garbage. And from the manic look in the Annunaki's eye, he'd enjoyed doing it, too! Dirk had come into conflict with a lot of things in his time at the King of Beasts - robots, actual gods, giant monsters - but this... Crazy Granddad Reggie had told him stories of the Annunaki's penchant for sadism and brutality, but not one of them had prepared him for the level of cold-blooded heartlessness Fyrros had just demonstrated. One thing was clear - the Nibirian...

...was a prick.

A deep, bellowing laugh cut into the dark engle's thoughts like a semi truck speeding into a McMecho's. Turning on the spot, Dirk witnessed Fyrros holding his own scaly sides, shaking with manic laughter that rattled the rubble around him.

"What's the big joke?" snapped the Dark Angel, now thoroughly angry.

"I just love how easy it is to get away with all this!" Fyrros crowed. "I mean, I knew you pigeons were cowards, but I didn't believe I'd walk over you this easily!" He stepped towards the amassed crowd, and the elves stepped back with cries of terror, now thoroughly frightened of the Annunaki for what he had done to the late Rosie.

"I want to burn down half a village," continued the alien, "and you let me! I want to massacre half it's population - you sit there and let me! I want to bring my planet onto a collision course with yours," and here Fyrros' voice came as a thunderous, earth-shaking roar as his body flared at an almost blinding light, "and you just sit right there and let me!"

The light was so intense that Elf and Dirk alike had to shield their eyes from it, else they all would have most likely been blinded. But even as he winced from the pain, Dirk felt something click in the back of his mind. He was recalling some faint memory from when he was a child, of Grandad Reggie sitting him on his lap and, in his thick Irish brogue, talking about something massive and unstoppbale and...

"Woah, back the fuck up," he called out, hoping to stop the Annunaki mid-rant. This seemed to be successful, as the lizard quickly dropped his fire and turned his head towards the Low Angel. Good - he was no longer truing to blind anyone and his attention was away from the elves.

Now here came the big question. "What was that about your planet and mine?"

"Oh, did nobody tell you?" Fyrros's eyes narrowed as he glared at the dark angel. "I guess you pigeons reall are as dense as you look. In a few days from now..."

"You're expositing, aren't you?" asked Dirk.

"...Planet Nibiru's orbit is going to intersect that of Planet Earth's. Normally, the two planets would bypass each other with no effect whatsoever, in complete defiance of the laws of physics. And our scientists believe..."

"Jesus dick, you're expositing," groaned Dirk.

"...this planet is the whole reason why Nibiru's greater gravity doesn't completely obliterate Earth - it's generating some kind of gravitational shield. We don't know why or how," the monster admitted with a sort of shrug, "but we all decided there and then that, in order to kill the weed we had to go for the root."

Click. And suddenly everything made perfect sense.

"I get it now," snarled Dirk, taking a step forward and fluttering his wings in threat. "You guys blow up Lapulas, and that lets Nibiru rip Earth apart with it's stronger gravity. Tidal waves, earthquakes, lava flows, the works. Then you shunt your planet into Earth's old orbit and take over, am I right?"

"I'm impressed," growled Fyrros, baring his teeth. "I figured that all those years of being stranded on Earth would have addled your brains. But it seems you're just the same interfering feathred rats as always."

A long, awful pause. And in that pause, the Dark Angel realized what he had to do. Fyrros was, quite clearly, a threat to not just Lapulas and the Earth, but a threat to the entire universe. And while Dirk was not usually the sort of person to apply those kiddy labels of "good" and "evil" to anything, the sheer callousness the Annunaki had shown in the few minutes he had been on the planet definitely deserved some kind of award in the latter category. He'd be buggered, quite frankly, if he was going to let the Nibrians get away with their half-baked schemes, even though he had no idea what this had to do with Christmas or why Fyrros apparently hated so much.

There was only one thing for it - he was going to have to kick some arse.

But first things first. The elves behind him were going to have to get as far away from the village as possible. During his time at the King of Beasts, Dirk had only used the mixed Martial Arts techniques learned over his brother's life because using the Low Angel's natural magic would have been somewhat overkill. But now, facing an extremely powerful alien entity without so much as a pair of Orbitars on him, the youngest Angel Twin was going to have to go all out. The results would not be pretty, and no way was he going to let the villagers be caught in the crossfire. It made him sick to think of what lives could be lost in a battle like this.

"Merry," he called over his shoulder. "Take all the survivors you can. Get them out of this village and into the forest. And don't come out until you see me coming out of the village, or what's left of it. Understand?"

"But what about-?" a concerned Merry began to say.

"I said fucking move!" snapped Dirk. And that was all the cue the elves needed. Merry promptly took to his heels, ushering those elves who could still walk or be assisted into a big huddle, assisited by other, older elves who seemed to want to look important for some reason. With much panicked muttering and jingling of bells, the village began to empty itself of living residents, each one making a slow but steady path up towards the woods and out of the area.

"Aw, look at that," purred Fyrros almost mockingly. "Sending them all away to fight me alone. Of course, you do realize how gutless that is? After all," added the beast, grinning wide enough to show all of his teeth at once, "suicide is the-"

"Shut the fuck up."

Fyrros recoiled from the insult, momentarily stunned. Then a grackled chuckle rolled from his ancient lungs. "Spirited, I see," he retorted. "Let's see if that will save you when I turn your body to ash."

"You're welcome to try, fuckface."

The shouting and jingling of the retreating elves died away until the sounds of their hurried exodus died away into the distance. This left only two people in the street. On one side, Dirk, his ebony feathers rustling in the breeze, his brown eyes narrowed in hatred for the alien being in front of him. On the other, Fyrros, his body burning brightly against the snow, his tail lashing impatiently as he awaited what was next to come. Both knew that, here and now, a rivalry as ancient as time itself was to be ressurected - one side seeking galactic domination and the other standing in the way. The fate of Lapulas, and indeed Earth, depended on the outcome of this fight.

A sudden wind howled through the streets, casting driving snow across the landscaoe and fanning the still-burning blaze that was engulfing the elve's once-proud village.

That was the signal.

One minute, both had been standing still. The next, Fyrros squawked as a fist slammed into his chin, throwing his head back and knocking him off balance, staggering. The instant he heard the lizard-being's teeth clack together, the Dark Angel quickly ducked low and rammed his other fist into the scaly gut, ignoring the pain as the white-hot flesh left a horrible red burn upon his skin. The Annunaki doubled over with a cough, and Dirk was quick to follow his attack with a wild elbow that nevertheless struck Fyrros in the side of the head, sending the demon sprawling to the snow. With an almost triumphant laugh, Dirk dropped down with every intention of bashing the Nibirian's teeth out.

But in the next instant a blast of intense fire struck him in the chest and knocked him backwards, and had he not quickly spread his wings in order to keep his balance, he would have ended up on his back. As the angel recovered his footing, pain singing through the horrible burn on his chest, the alien warlord rose to his feet, his hand still glowing from the flaming blast he had just launched. Yellowish blood was oozing crom a cut on the Annunaki's lip, his feathery crest had been knocked askew and a snarl of indignation had formed on his reptillian face.

"I see how you could have drove us away from Earth," Fyrros snarled, flames flickering intensely. "But I am nothing like my forefathers, pigeon!"

With a roar, the Annunaki lunged forward with almost blinding speed, a fist swinging towards Dirk like a sledgehammer. But that fist impacted not with a face, as was the intention, but with the reinforced armguards that the angel was almost never seen without. Dirk had blocked just in time, and even thought the bone-shuddering impact sent waves of pain up his arms, the plucky Dark Angel remained on his feet. Snarling with frustration, Fyrros twisted on the spot, seeking to drive one of his taloned feet right into the teenage celebrity's gut and-

A sudden pressure on his tail made him stall, gasping with the shock.

"Hah!" cried a voice from behind him. "Got your tail!" Fyrros looked over his shoulder, and sure enough, Dirk had grabbed a hold of the Nibirian's whip-like tail with both hands, clutching it with an unbelivably strong grip in just the right spot to avoid being burned. The angel wore a cocky smirk on his face, as if he knew that this act alone had given him a significant advantage - no matter which way the alien twisted, he couldn't writhe his way out of his opponen't grasp.

"You..." spluttered Fyrros, twisting as though someone had dumped a bucket of live tarantulas on his head. "Do you think this is a game, you walking feather-duster?! I could snap your bones like twigs, yet you dare to toy with me?!"

Dirk seemed to ignore the threats entirely. "Speaking of games," he replied as he tightened his grip on the lashing tail, "Ever played Super Mario 64?"

Fyrros paused, clearly confused. "Well, yes, but I fail to see the- AAAAAAGH!"

The next thing the bewilered Annunaki knew, the world was a blur, and Dirk was swinging him around like a sack of potatoes. So fast was he revolving that the snow was literally sucked up into the cone of air created by the spinning angel, forming a powdery-white tornado that engulfed our hero(?) momentarily as he increased his speed, his screaming captive turning into a reddish ring around a black blur. Then there was a jerk, and Fyrros found himself flung right into the side of another log cabin, smashing straight into the wall and leaving a splintery hole in the side.

Dizzy as he was, Dirk wasted no time in following the attack up. His laurel crown glowed brightly as, with a cry, he lashed out with both hands, firing a volley of violet-coloured spheres that surged forward, homing in on the building and striking with deafening explosions. Every impact threw up a blinding cloud of dust and debris, and the ground shook with the sheer force of the blows. As the house was shortly obliterated, Dirk's laurel crown faded back to it's original hue, the Low Angel staggering as he sought to catch his senses and his breath from launching such an attack. Using all that magic took a lot out of an angel.

The dust took quite a long time to settle, some blowing away on the wind whilst heavier particles settled on the snow like black sugar dusting. But even after it had all cleared away, giving a perfectly clear view of the rubble, no sign of Dirk's enemy became apparent. The angel patiently waited for a few seconds, muscls tense with expectation, but no glimpse of the pyromaniacal Destroyer of Life made itself known. Not even a limb sticking out of the wreckage or a flash of tail. The whole area had become oddly quiet after the echoes of the Homing Shots had faded.

"Huh," mused Dirk. "Guess for all his bragging and titles, he was really kind of a pussy. Suppose I'd better go and- AUGH!"

The cry came as a fist suddenly drove itself into his gut. Fyrros had burst out of the wreckage at a speed not even the angel could comprehend, and the enraged fire demon was quick to take revenge for his earlier indignation - grabbing an Annunaki's tail is one of the worst insults imaginable. The blow drove the wind out of Dirk, causing him to double over from the pain, but his oppresor was far from finished with him, and a taloned kick to the temple was enough to simultaneoulsy draw blood and send the angel tumbling sideways across the snow like a feathery bowling ball, limbs and snow flying in every direction.

"NO-ONE HUMILIATES A SON OF NIBIRU AND LIVES!" thundered Fyrros, steam and smoke literally spewing from his jaws and nostrils with every word. Rearing back, the Nibirian conquerer lifted both hands aboth his head, a harsh light gathering between his palms that illuminated the rapidly-darkening sky with it's prescence. Then, with a bellow of rage, the flaming alien lunged forward, and the lights of the burning village itself was blotted out by the glare of the monstrous fireball that careered down the street, melting the snow and starting fresh fires as it careered towards it's destination.

"Shit, shit, SHIT!" Galvanized by the sight of the flaming projectile headed towards him, Dirk leapt to his feet and bolted in terror, feet going fifty to the dozen. The heat of the attack licked at his feathers as he ran down the street, his dialogue reduced to even more incoherant swearing than it usually was as his eyes cast this way and that, searching for some way to escape the boulder-sized fireball that was literally hot on his heels. But the thing was getting closer and closer, his feathers beginning to smoulder as it caught up with him, and it seemed as though there was no way to escape.

Then, just as though it seemed he would be overtaken, he saw the alleyway.

And leapt.

-------

Far ahead, trudging towards the woods, the elves cried in horror as a massive plume of fire and smoke arose from their rapidly-disintergreating village. Even as the cacophonic sound of the explosion hammered down on their ears, and even as the shockwaves threatened to knock them off of their feet, the amassed survivors could only stare and watch, wondering what had become of the angel who had come to save them.

"Should we go back?" piped a voice like a xylophone being played.

"Are you dense, Handy?!" hollered the voice of an elder, like a rusty gate hinge. "Do you want to get killed out there?!"

"But we can't just leave him!" cried another elf. "He needs help! If he keeps fighting that horrible Nibirian like this, he'll be killed for sure!"

"And how do you plan to help him, Parsley?" came the reply.

A horrible silence fell. The elves knew they had no answer to that question - those who had dared stand against Fyrros had suffered the worst, with snapped necks and torn limbs that ensured agonizing injuries instead of the flaming deaths many of their others had experienced. Some had survived, groaning in agony, to be carried and escorted by the healthy survivors towards their refuge, but the majority had perished from their wounds long before Dirk had arrived. As much as it pained them to leave their new friend behind, there was simply no way they could assist him in direct combat.

"We just have to have faith, fellows," rattled the elder's voice from within the crowd. "All we can do now is hope that the angel can drive Fyrros away. Now let's hurry up - I think I heard a bear rustling close by!"

This was not, strictly speaking, true - that particular elder was famed for hearing bears everywhere he went due to a childhood prank gone awry. But young elves are extremely gullible even at the best of times, and thanks to the invading Nibirian these elves were jumpier than a herd of kangaroos on a sugar high. A terrible sense of unease came over them all, and they began to pick up the pace, running faster towards the woods and bunching together to support the weak and injured.

None of them noticed a small gaggle of them peel away and, once they were sure they wouldn't be noticed, turn and dash back to the village.

-------

"Come now, pigeon, I've waited long enough! Fight me face-to-face and save some dignity!"

From within the alleyway he'd taken refuge in, Dirk slowly stood up and dusted the snow from his body, nervously eying the smoking crater left behind by the fireball. The dark angel had not escaped unscathed - the back of his chiton was shredded by shrapnel from the explosion, his body was covered in dirt and his wings and hair were a dishevelled mess. Blood flowed from grazes on his body and the claw marks on his temple and his hands and knees had been scraped rather badly. All-in-all, not the best condition he'd been in ever - he currently resembled Pit after the average encounter with a horde of fangirls.

But his mind was far away from that as he leant against the wall of a cabin, trying to get his breath back.

Fucking hell, he thought to himself. Grandad Reggie didn't say the Nibirians were this strong. He'd been prepared for a tought fight to protect Lapulas and the elves, yes, but Fyrros was proving himself to be no pushover, not by any means. That stuff with the fireball, the inexplicable speed and reflexes... this shit was clearly cribbed from a Dragon Ball Z episode! And as much as he liked that show, Dirk didn't fancy being on the end of something like that again. That fireball alone would have most likely killed him were it not for his quick thinking and reflexes, and who knows what other tricks the Annunaki had?

One thing was for certain. No way could Dirk take that thing in a straight-up fight, or he'd be turned into Spicy Angel Wings before he could say Jack Knife. No, if he was to stand any chance of beating Fyrros he was going to have to play it sneaky. He'd have to try and catch the alien by surprise, engaging him in a guerrilla war and not giving him the proper battle he craved. It was a risky, almost desperate strategy, but what other choices were there?

With slow, deliberate steps, Dirk began to manoeuvre his way down the alley he'd ducked into. Unlike the rest of the village, which either had lanterns to guide the way or was on fire, there was no light to see by except for that which the full moon cast down from above, so the place was perpetually in shadow. The Dark Angel tried to move as silently as possible, putting his feet down gently to avoid the telltale crunching noises of feet on snow, but the lack of light meant he had to grope his way along, one hand against the wood of what he assumed to be another log cabin as he trudged in order to keep on course.

"Enough of this!" Fyrros's voice sounded closer now, his voice laced with irritation. "Stop hiding in the shadows and face me!"

Fat chance of that, matey, Dirk thought to himself as he turned a corner. A series of slanted lights greeted his eyes, each one indicating the gaps between buildings, and the Low Angel moved as quickly and lightly as he could, practically skipping across the snow as he moved back the way he ran to escape the fireball. A glowing lightWith any luck, he'd be right behind the Annunaki before he'd known what was going on, and then he could finish this nonsense as soon as it had start-

Snap.

Dirk looked quickly down at the piece of wood beneath his foot, snapped in two, and groaned internally.

"Bugger," he hissed.

"I'll say," came a voice from in front of him.

Dirk look up just in time to get a face-full of leering eyes and grinning jaws before an elbow rammed itself into his face. There was a crunch as his nose broke, and the angel howled as he staggered, clutching the broken organ with one hand and trying to vainly defend himself with one hand. It was all for naught, for in the next instant he doubled over as sharp claws sliced through his chiton and ripped gouges in his skin that sang with burning pain, blood gushing from the wounds.

"Fool!" roared Fyrros as he grabbed the Low Angel by the hair and promptly rammed his head into the wall. "Did you really think you could sneak up on a Son of Nibiru?!" And with that, he twisted on the spot and hurled the angel right out of the alley and into the street, sprawling into the snow. The Annunaki straightened up and, his fire dimming, paced calmly out himself, stopping only to casually kick the corpse of an elf aside with one foot.

Dirk slowly staggered to his feet, trailing blood as he faced down his tormentor, a grim expression on his face. One hand reached up to yank the tattered remains of the chiton from his body and cast them aside, leaving him in his scuffed and ripped shirt and shorts. Not the sort of thing you'd wear for battle, or even winter, but it was what he was wearing at the time, and there was really no time to trade fashion tips right now.

"Okay," the angel growled, spitting out a tooth. "You're tougher than I thought. But I'm still kicking your arse back to Nibiru."

"You're welcome to try, whelp," Fyrros snarled, hunkering down.

Both charged.

-------

"Are you sure this is the right thing to do, Merry?"

"I'm positive, Sparky. We can't sit by and do nothing if Dirk is in trouble. I couldn't live with myself otherwise, and I don't think any of you could, either."

"But we can't fight that thing! He made mincemeat of half the entire village!"

'I'm not saying we should, Punchy. I know that Fyrros could be more than a match for Dirk, but we have to help him any way we can."

"Do you think he'd be happy if I did mouth-to-mouth on him?"

"Seriously, Maisy! In a bag! Off a cliff!"

"Quiet, you lot! We're almost there..."

-------

"Surrender, Low Angel scum! I have the advantage!"

"Advantage, my finely-tuned arse! I've still got plenty of fight!"

The last hour or so would be hard to describe in detail. Simply put, it had been a battle that would have given the average movie choreographer to rend his shirt, scream with jealousy and retire on the spot. The sort of fight where no quarter is asked, given or expected, as the enraged Fyrros lashed out with brutal blows, which were returned in kind by the stalwart Dirk. A claw swipe. A barring defense. A grapple for control. A push that sent the defender reeling back. A focused explosion of magical energy that consumes empty air. A combat roll to avoid a surging fireball. For every attack dealt, the combatants would return it in equal measure.

And yet, as the bettle progressed, it soon became apparent that for all his determination, Dirk was beginning to tire much quicker. Most of the enemies he had faced back in Manhattan had never been as strong as the Annunaki, usually requiring no more than one of the angel brother's shared weapons or self-taught martial arts to take down. Never before had the Dark Angel been subjected to such a grueling fight, where his magic reserves had come into play as frequently as they had just for the sake of keeping on par with this foe. And after the last hour of battle, the strain was beginning to show - his reflexes were dulled, his attacks lacked force and swung wide, and his breath was coming in ragged gasps that spoke of exhaustion beyond measure. And let's not even go into the state of his clothing right now.

Something had to give.

And it did, as Dirk eventually swung out with a wild haymaker that came out too far, and was caught with one clawed hand that held the fist like a vice. The next thing the angel knew, a retaliatory jab delivered to the midsection resulted in a hideous popping noise and an agonising pain like scorpions eating away at the insides - some viral organ had just given out. Dirk doubled over in the Nibirian's grasp, gagging, and his laurel crown flickered like a faulty Christmas light before fading into darkness with an almost solemn finality.

"I'm sorry," chuckled the Nirbiran, "was that your glubok?"

Dirk hissed, and tried to launch an energy blast to shut the flaming warlord up.

Nothing. Not even a spark. He didn't even feel the magical power welling up, just an increase in the terrible pain that was trickling through his body. Trying for an explosive wave had the same effect, with no result other than a burning sensation along his arm, and when he desperately tried to mimic the spell Pit had used to turn his girlfriend's tormentor into a Tempura shrimp, he almost vomited as foul-tasting bile surged up his throat and threatened to choke him for even trying.

His magic was gone.

"Oh, yes!" Fyrros could barely contain the sadistic laughter. "That was your glubok! I might have guessed!"

The next moment, the Annunaki yanked on his captive's arm, and there was a horrible riping noise as the entire limb was torn from it's socket. Dirk screamed as he lost all sensation from that limb, blood spurting from the ragged stump onto the snow, but his torment wasn't over yet. With a piercing crack, a taloned foot rammed into the back of the angel's head, driving him face first into the floor and pinning him completely to the ground by his own skull.

"Enough of this charade," snarled Fyrros as he loomed over his fallen foe. "What were you thinking, challenging an Annunaki to single combat? You had no idea of the kind of power you pitted yourself against. You didn't even have a clue as to why I was here in the first place, do you?"

The savage claws dug into the prone angel's head, the burning heat from Fyross's body threatening to set his hair alight. Dirk winced as his face was pushed into the ground, but his spirit remained defiant. "All I heard," he spat, voice muffled by the snow "was a giant orange tampon going 'Look at me, I'm a flaming lizard alien! I blow up planets and hate Christmas because I'm a big prick!'"

"And who wouldn't be," came the reply, "after all the injustices we've suffered? Surely your own forefathers told you something of this, or was it omitted from your libraries like everything else about us?! During our time ruling Earth..."

"Holy fuck, again with the exposition?" howled Dirk in a mixture of pain and exasperation.

"...our ancestors revelled in the Christmas celebrations the same way the humans did! Of course, it wasn't the same as it was now, but the spirit of the thing, that was the same - the never-changing feeling one associates with it. Our fathers and their fathers before them have told our generation so many wonderful stories about the one called Santa Claus. Of the presents he would bring to all beings in the galaxy on his magical carriage pulled by flying deer! Of the joy! Of the merriment!"

The foot shoved down, and Dirk howled as the talons pierced his flesh.

"THAT WE WERE DENIED!

It wasn't enough to be driven from the planet like dogs by a bunch of stinking pigeons, was it?! Or cursed throughout the galaxy as warmongers and barbarians?! No, we also had to be abandoned by the one being who actually cared about us, who saw us as equals among the other races instead of power-mad tyrants! Imagine that, Low Angel! Imagine, after being driven to the darkest corner of the universe, that you waited and waited for a sign from the one you looked up to as a father figure, and to still be waiting a thousand years afterwards because he'd turned his back on your kind! A puppy being kicked doesn't experience nearly the same amount of pain!"

Dirk, beat-up as he was, tried to piece this all together, and rejected most of what he found as incredibly fucking stupid.

"Seriously?" The Dark Angel struggled to rise despite the pain and his lack of an arm. "You're going to destroy Christmas and cause the apocalypse over that? That literally has to be the worst fucking attempt at playing the victim I've ever heard in my entire life. It was their own fault the Annunaki got driven off Earth like that - they shouldn't have been conquering and subjugating those poor Mayans all over the place! Seriously, Dr. Seuss gave the Grinch a better motivation than that, and the guy wasn't even on fire!"

"If we cannot celebrate Christmas the same way our ancestors did," growled Fyrros from above, "then no-one in the universe shall, either! Of course, I never expected you to understand - you and your filthy kind were always concerned more about yourselves than your fellow beings! How glad am I that your miserable race never left Earth!"

A pause. A long, awful pause, in which the wind howled, the fires of the burning village flickered in the distance and Dirk's svered arm dripped blood.

"Y'know," retorted the angel at last, coughing on blood and dust, "I wish I could same thing about you. The whole universe would have been a nice place if you'd never fucking left the dimension you came from, you know? Maybe planets like Lapulas wouldn't have to live in fear, and then you'd just be a bunch of bogey-men everyone would tell their children about at bedtime. A bunch of heartless, maniacal, bloodthirsty Scrooges that existed only in nightmares."

"Well, then," rumbled Fyrros as he lifted an arm.

Fire gathered at his fingertips.

"Bah, humbug."

The scream echoed round the valley.

And when the light faded, Dirk was still sprawled on the ground. Unmoving, unresponsive and covered in burns.

Dirkmas Part 1

The last coherant memory of the Christmas party Dirk Angelos had was watching two faeries make out whilst slumped on the couch.

Not that he could remember how he got there in the first place, of course. It had been one of those parties that starts out like any other frat boy party one holds when your idiotically famous brother is away, your newest novel just got published and you've got nothing to do except watch the new addition to the shark tank derp his way into the walls. Seriously, goblin sharks are fucking stupid. Anyway, it had everything that a frat boy party needs - nachoes, alcohol, shitty music pounding from a cheap boombox scrounged from Wes Weasley a reputable eletronics store, honest. The guests mostly consisted of Pit's buddies from the Gravitas Grand Theatre, who had brought their friends along, who had brought their friends along until the house was full of various mythical creatures and aliens.

But that was alright, because why else was it three stories tall? And, up until half-eleven at night, it had been very much like the average frat boy party, too. There was talking very loud to be heard over the screamingly-loud music, bottles left in windows because the glass recycling bag was getting full up, and the obligatory drinking games. The highlight of those had to be one session of Dirty Pint, wherupon Bobby was unlucky enough to get to drink from the glass, and promptly ran to the sink to throw up out of all six of his mouths at once. Dirk could have done something to help out his suffering comerade, but he was a little too occupied with laughing his arse off at the scene, as was everyone else.

And then the roofies kicked in.

Sweet Lady Palutena, did the roofies kick in.

The rest of the night passed in a blur. Delia's flowers bloomed right in the middle of a half-naked table dance, causing whoops of delight from all present. A minotaur put his head through a wall. Yig, the Father of Serpents, climbed onto the roof, screamed that he could fly and fell three stories to a broken leg. A trio of Predators tried to hold a paintball tournament in the hall corridors, leaving an increasing number of laser burns in the walls. And Dirk observed it all through eyes blurred by the gauze of cider and Rophynol, his head feeling like a giant mosquito-man was pumping warm porridge into his head and he couldn't muster the energy to tell it that it was comitting a social faux-pas.

It was around the point where he was slumped on the couch, his chiton drenched in beer and sweat, watching the two faeries (where they cousins or did all faeries look alike?) trying to eat each other's mouths, where the world simply fell away from him.

-------

Nibiru...

Nibiru is coming...

Yes... Yeeesss...

Help! Somebody help us!

Burn... BURN... BUR-

-------

"GAH!"

Three things occured to Dirk as he bolted upright. One - he needed to lay off the cheese, because that was a seriously fucked-up nightmare. Two - Rophynol didn't leave any headaches at all! Hah! Being an angel rules sometimes!

Three - this wasn't Pit's couch in a messy living room. It was a bed, and a very comfortable one at that, in a homely-looking log cabin. The sort of log cabin one reads about in fairy tales, with woven carpeting and a creaky-looking rocking chair and a roaring fire that fills the whole room with it's glow. In short, it was the complete polar opposite of the half-ruined, bozze-drenched, puke-stained mess that was Pit's front room, or at least what bits Dirk could remember of it. And to top it all off, a quick sweep around the room revealed the holly wreaths and tinsel strewn across the walls, and the carefully-decorated tree standing proud and showing off it's beads and baubles/

Dirk's thought process went something like this:

What the hell is this place? Is... is this Hell?

...Nah, can't be Hell. There'd be a lot more screaming. And a lot more of Razor whipping people. Seriously, I think that's how he gets off now. Fucked up.

Throwing off the covers, Dirk was just about to get out of bed when a glance down revealed another shocking fact. His chiton, formerly covered in a fine sheen of alcohol, sweat and vomit, was now fresh and crisp, devoid of all dampness and creases. Furthermore, a tentative sniff was rewarded with the scent of pine needles, rather than the stench of alcohol and stomach juices.

Well, then, maybe it's Heaven? Nah, that's not it - Heaven doesn't have log cabins. Only samey rows of  terraced houses painted the same shitty white. Or a penthouse apartment, if you're really pious.

Clambering out of the bed, the dark angel carefully and slowly paced over to one of the windows set in the sides of the cabin, where bright sunlight streamed in like water from a broken dam. His eyes, formerly heavy with tiredness, drunkeness and drugs, squinted on reflex as he reached the glass, but it wasn't long before they adjusted to the light, allowing their owner to get a better look at his surroundings.

Snow. Everything he could see was covered in snow. From the frankly enormous pine trees lined up in neat military rows one one side, to the long stretch of field in front of him, to the rolling hills far away in the distance, everything was completely white. And it was still coming down - not in the usual headlong deluge that Dirk had, up until now, associated with snow, but in an almost idlyic dusting that fluttered it's way down as if it were admiring the scenery while it was at it. The angel would have been abble to accept all this, were it for the fact that the sky was a perfect summery blue, instead of a white mass of cloud that characterizes heavy snow.

"Okay," Dirk said out loud, rubbing a temple with one hand, "that proves it. I'm not on Earth anymore, because nowhere on Earth besides Disneyland could get away with looking like a fucking kid's book. Who really thinks this is-?"

"Hi-ho!"

"GAH!" That's the second heart attack our hero(?) had today, as he whipped around on the spot - so absorbed was he in his own talk (as usual) that he didn't even hear the door opening. Standing in the doorway, wearing the same sort of condescending smile one could imagine a primary school teacher having, was a very small person indeed - at least half of Sarah's height at a guess - dressed in the most obnoxious combination of bright red and forest green possible. Wide blue eyes beered out from a fringe of brown hair, staring at Dirk with a kind of mad innocence.

"Oh, I'm sorry!" cried the newcomer, raising his hands. "I didn't think you were awake!"

"Sure," grunted Dirk, "that's perfect grounds for giving me a goddamn heart attack." And then, just because somebody had to ask it, "Who are you, anyway?"

"Call me Merry!" The small figure seemed to completely ignore his new guest's foul mouth and incredulous stare as he made his way to a table set in what could a kitchen area of the cabin. "I was working out in the woods not far from here when I found you unconcious in a valley. So I took you back to my home and nursed you back to health."

"Well, that's nice of you, I guess." Dirk couldn't help but notice, and also balk at, the way his host's outfit made little jingling noises with every movement - the pansy literally had little bells sown onto his hat and arms. They were jingling right now, as Merry reached into something that looked vaguely like an old stove and took out a foil-covered dish or plate of some kind. Honestly, who in their right mind thought that was fashionable, apart from Santa's elves-

...Wait a second. Log cabin. Silly little elf with fucking annoying jingly bells. Old-timey Christmas decorations.

...This is-

"You're not from around here, are you?"

Merry's voice, like tiny bells of silver, cut into his thoughts.  The dark angel looked down, seeing the wide blue eyes looking up at him, and immediately got flashbacks to almost every time Sarah walked in and started acting cute over Eshe and Del. Sometimes it got on his nerves - being a dark angel made you diametrically opposed to cutesiness that could floor a charging rhino - but for some reason Dirk felt... well, in his words, more of a goddamned sap than usual. Like he could trust the little guy, no matter how childish he looked.

"Well," he said, slowly. "It's kind of a long story, and I'm not sure you'd understand all of it..."

"Maybe we could discuss it over dinner?" Merry lifted the cover, and Dirk's eyes widened in surprise at the sight of the biggest, roundest, most delicious-and-roasted-to-perfection-turkey he had ever seen IN HIS ENTIRE-

"Woah, slow down! There's enough for both of us!"

-------

Little did our hungry angel know that the cabin he had ended up in was part of something bigger.

It was the sort of picturesque, serene little village one expects to find on the back of a postcard. It consisted almost entirely of log cabins of varying sizes, each one bedecked with their own cap of snow and garnished with a variety of tinsel, baubles and other such decorations. A wreath hung over every door, and the glow of fires flickered from within the iced-over windows. The whole thing had such a thick air of jollity and cheer you probably would have to carry a spoon the size of a man to dig your way through it.

And on this bright and wonderful day, the inhabitants of this place were busying themselves with all sorts of important tasks in preperation for the days to come. Some of the elves scrambled over a massive tree dragged in from the woods, decorating it with utmost care. Some sawed and hammered wood for various purposes, whilst yet more stood behind lavish stalls, selling their wares to those who would stop buy. And wherever you looked, there was laughter and conversation and good cheer of a sort one has to dig through troughs of organized crime and speciesism to find nowadays.

"I think this year's gonna be the best Christmas ever, Tiara!"

"It's gonna be the biggest, that's for sure, Ricky!"

"Who wants to go sledging on the hill with Speedy and I?"

"Come on, Specs, you're standing under the mistletoe! Gimme a kiss already!"

"Uh, maybe later, Maisy."

Yes, Christmas on Planet Lapulas was going to be great.

And then someone (some say it was Tim the Blacksmith) looked up from his work and say the stranger approaching.

He was nothing like the elves had seen before. Considering that Merry had shown them all that unconcious angel from earlier, one would think they were immune to strange things by now. But the fact that this newcomer wore a ragged brown cloack over his form, hiding his shape from view as he paced slowly towards the village, immediately roused the curiosity of those who witness him enter. The only thing that might have suggested that something was off was the way the snow seemed to melt under his feet, forming puddles with every step. But the novelty of a new visitor to their humble village overcame whatever suspicions the elves had.

"Look," cried one of their number. "A visitor!"

And then there was a rush of green and a mass of jingling bells.

"Hi-ho, visitor!"

"Don't crowd him, everyone! Give him some air!"

"Will you kiss me under the mistletoe?"

"Darn it, Maisy, not now!"

The cloaked figure looked around at the massing elves, red eyes leering from underneath the hood. One of the elves, a young girl with freckled cheeks and curly blonde hair, pushed her way past her chattering co-workers and into the ring formed by their jolly green bodies. The newcomer was tall, obscenely so - the elf had to literally lean back so she could look him in the face, blue eyes wide with wonder.

"You're awfully tall, aren't you?" she piped up, in a voice much like the whistling of a tin flute. "Where are you from?"

The figure looked down at her, and at her question the eyes narrowed. The cloak parted, and a scaly hand emerged from within the tatty folds, glowing at the fingertips.

A cracked growl of a voice echoed across the valley.

"Burn."

And then the elves knew pain.

-------

"...but you gotta be really careful with those, because then you might wake up naked with some dude you barely know from high school and your bathroom curtains have been stolen."

Merry blinked at Dirk from across the table, ceasing to cut his turkey as amazement took hold. "Wow," he breathed. "That sounds like fun! And also a very dangerous thing that could very easily backfire!"

"Dangerous is how I roll." By comparison to the elf's dainty table manners, Dirk was ravenously ripping hunks from a single drumstick with his teeth, ignoring the possibility of bones getting stuck in the throat or anything like that. Again, the youngest of the Angel Bros. found it rather wierd that his host didn't try to berate him for the crunching and slurping noises that resulted from this, nore the occasional loud belch or the way he let the juices run down his chin. Wherever he'd ended up this time, they must be really accepting of people. Or, considering that the little elf willingly wore jingle bells (shudder shudder) in his clothing, really stupid.

"So," Dirk suggested as he swallowed his mouthful, "where am I exactly, again?"

"Planet Lapulas!" came the cheery reply. "And you're just in time for the Christmas celebrations."

"Wait, you guys celebrate Christmas too?" Dirk's eyes widened in disbelief.

"Yep!" Merry looked as though he was going to leap out of his seat from excitement, drawing yet another Sarah comparison. "And hopefully, you'll get to see-"

A shockwave. It's only a letter and two syllables, but it contains a lot of incident, such as the plates rattling on the table. Or some of the pins holding up the tinsel coming undone and letting their charge drape itself across the walls like a bored, furry snake. Or Dirk falling out of his chair with a cry as the vibration shook him off balance. Basically, what I'm trying to type is that a lot happened all at once.

"What the flying fuck was that?!" cried the dark angel as he picked himself up from the floor.

"Oh, no!" Merry's face was contorted in fear and panic as he jumped from his seat and rushed to the window. "That sounded like it came from my village!"

Dirk quickly ran up and pressed his face to the glass, trying to locate the so-called village that the elf was speaking of. For a moment, all he saw was a white haze, until the brilliant idea of wiping the window with one hand passed through his mind. Once that was out of the way, he strained his eyes to try and catch a glimpse of houses and/or people in the distance. Nothing odd so far - still the same trees, the same hills, the same snow, the same cloud of smoke rising up in the-

Wait a camel-buggering second.

"Is your village supposed to be on fire?" asked Dirk.

"Um, no," came the worried reply. "Not unless Sparky put too much wood on the Christmas Bonfire, and that's not going up until three days!"

Dirk could have dwelled on the question of why these elvish aliens had bonfires at Christmas, of all things, but then never let it be said he never had his priorities straight. I mean, if he had three wishes, he'd ask for immortality first, and then the bitches and penthouse apartment. I mean, a cosy pad and fine women is all very well, but unless you have all the time in the world to enjoy them, then it's a fleeting kind of decadence when you get old and find that all the gaudy gold statues and chamoagne hot-tubs don't really suit your tastes. Seriously, why would-

...what was I talking about?

Oh, yeah, the part where Dirk ran out of the house without so much as putting on a coat.

"Be careful!" cried Merry as he ran after him.

-------

The carnage was pretty much indescribable. The most appropriate metaphor that Dirk could think of as he dashed through the smoldering streets was that someone had let a bull made of fire and C4 rampage around the place, and even that didn't even come close to what he was seeing. Cabins were reduced to charred wrecks, bits of stall and sideshow scattered the floor and the air smelt overpoweringly of burnt oak, charred tinsel and crushed hopes. Which, for the benefit of the reader, smells like diesel oil mixed with burnt leather. And to top off all that, reaching the town square revealed an even more distressing sight - bodies. Elf bodies, burnt and blackened, lying in piles and scatterings all around the snow. And many more elves, still alive, hunched over their fallen comrades, weeping in horror at the fate that had befallen them.

Just looking at the destruction that had taken place here made the dark angel's stomach churn. So he just trashed his brother's pad whilst holding a massive, drug-fueled party - that didn't make him a bad person! And yes, he had killed things before, but that was usually due to them being massive dickbends. So whoever or whatever was responsible for killing these tiny aliens, who so far had demonstrated no superpowers or carried no kickass weapons on their tiny alien persons and lived just to be constantly cheerful... That was Disney Evil. Which, as we all know, is the very worst kind of evil.

"What the..." he growled, chenching his fists.

"No..." Merry's chiming voice was warbly with grief and horror as he observed the finely-cooked bodies of his fellows. "How could this have happened? Who or what could have possibly done something like this?"

"Why don't you ask that guy over there?" asked an elf with a voice like a faulty saxophone, pointing down the street.

All followed the finger of the aformentioned elf, just in time to see the cloaked figure from several paragraphs ago walk into view. His ragged attire billowed in the updraft created by the burning cabins, and his piercing yellow eyes scanned the crowd of elves almost accusingly. With every sweep they made, the terrified villagers fell back with horrified cries, no longer seeing a new friend or visitor to play games with or shower with gifts, but a horror from the darkest recess of the cupboard the Boogeyman himself refused to go in. The one that stank of mothballs.

And then they settled on Dirk. And stayed there.

Dirk was not only aware of the searing heat that seemed to come from within the billowing hood, but also that all the elves that had not been torched were looking at him, expecting him to say something heroic or courageous. Neither of which he was inclined to do at the moment. Seriously, anyone wearing a cloak and blowing up houses usually means business, and that was just the sort of person that not even the most pugilistic of dark angels wouldn't tangle with. But...

"Um... I don't know who you think you are," he tried, in as brave a voice as he could manage, "but you're a prick if you think you can go around blowing up people's houses like that!"

"Yeah!" piped up an elf from somewhere behind him. "It's Christmas, after all!"

The figure twitched.

"Christmas?"

The hand emerged, grasping hold of the hem of the cloack around the neck. The eyes flared dangerously, illuminating the onlookers with flaming light.

"Christmas?!"

With a sudden motion, the stranger ripped his cloak away, casting it behind him dramatically.

"I... Hate... CHRISTMAS!"

...

...

"...the fuck?!"

Monster Mash - Round 1 Fight 3 Votes

Hello, sports fans, and welcome back to The Monster Mash 199X yadda yadda yadda.

So, um, you may remember our last fight, where a giant shark and a giant snake might have accidentally destroyed a dam and caused untold millions of deaths and dollars of flood damage. Thing is, because of that little incident, GaiaCorp hasn't really been doing that well in the press as of late. Phrases such as "irresponsible", "morally ambiguous" and "plastic-goggles-wearing tossers" have been thrown around a lot recently, especially by the Governor of Malibu, who now hates us with the same sort of loathing we usually reserve for people who overtake on the hard shoulder. As a result, we've kind of dropped in Hog Wild Fashionista's Morally Questionable Supercompany Popularity Poll, just below the Mishima Zaibatsu and just above Soylent Green.

Well, fuck those guys. They knew the risks when they allowed us to put two giant monsters in their state, they knew the non-disclosure agreement said we couldn't be held responsible for any damage incurred, and they still blame us for what happened? Pussies. Just because we trashed a stretch of coastline, doesn't mean we don't know how to put on a show without causing loss of innocent lives (ugh, makes me sick just to say that)! So that's why this next fight is stationed in a far-flung stretch of ruins and wasteland that nobody goes to, and therefore won't care about when it gets trashed! And this week's conflict between monsters is taking an unusual turn today - it's a match of pure, unbridled grit and gumpton against sneaky, underhanded backstabbing and douchebaggery!

Brace yourselves, viewers across the globe, for the earth-shaking event that our Marketing Division has decided to title THE RUMBLE IN THE RIVIERA!

IN THE BLUE CORNER...

You know what Mann Co. is, right? Of course you do! They practically own all of Australia right now, and as we speak they're making their way to buying out New Zeland! With an iron grip on everything to do with the Independant Republic of Australia, from politics to commerce to military to space programs, Saxton Hale's corporate powerhouse demanded a mascot that was as rough, tough and unforgiving as the country he represents. And thank God they came to us to make it, because we were running low on beer money. Ladies and Gentlemen, Ol' Fangs the GATOROID!

Ol' Fangs isn't just any old supersized alligator. He's the latest in a long line of carefully bred, hand-reared gators, picked for their size, strength, ferocity and willingness to eat nothing but raw chickens laced with steroids and growth hormones. Over the years, each succesive generation gave birth to increasingly larger and larger gators, some of them growing too big even for the pre-prepared biome we had constructed for them. And then came the day when a certain dappled little chick broke free from his egg, took one look at the bright world around him and immediately devoured his broodmates alive in a fit of red-eyed apoplexy. We knew, then, we had our Gatoroid.

Unlike our previous gators, Gatoroid is nowhere near the size of the Empire State Building. He's almost exactly the same length as previous contender Mega Shark, reaching around 16 metres (53 feet) at a guess. His main weapons include that powerful crushing jaw of his, not to mention his lashing tail and stomping feet that create a creature almost unnaproachable from most angles. While slow and cumbersome on land, Gatoroid is a master swimmer, and on top of that he boasts the tendency to suddenly fly into steroid-enhanced rages should anything so much as insult him. While an unpredictable ability, it's one that may prove the difference between life and death.

IN THE RED CORNER...

Anarchy reigns in the former Russian Federation. Bits and pieces of this once-proud country have broken away in attempts to impose their own ideals of democracy, bueareaucracy, Mormonism and more over the central government. Almost every state is locked in perpetual civil war, with countries appearing and dissapearing from the globe overnight. What the Central Russian Goverment needed was something to keep order in these troubled times - something to strike fear in the hearts of dissenters, to be told in half-formed legends by creaky grandmas to wide-eyed children.

So they asked us to make Okhotniki the ICE SPIDERS.

Fuck you, Russia. Fuck you for commissioning a terror weapon that thrives in cold climates and leaves no evidence of it's passing. Because we knew exactly what you wanted, and there was no fucking way we would touch that with a sterilized barge pole. We had to call in our sister company Greentech to handle the spider eggs, and even then they wouldn’t do it unless they got a share of the commission. Thank Christ we only lost as few personnel as we did when the things hatched, because it took fucking ages to round them up, tranquilize them, box them and ship them over to you, you sick bastards. We hope you’re happy, because it took ages to mop up the blood.

Okay, so the spiders don’t do well in warm conditions, and on their own they pose as much of a threat as a puppy on a sugar high. But these awful arachnids have a legspan of at least ten feet, and like nothing better than to sneak up trees, across snow, down chimneys and anywhere behind you before sinking their fangs into your neck. And if that’s not bad enough, they’ve been seen communicating via chirps and clicks, working together to drive prey into their webbing traps before swarming them. That’s right. We’ve bred a species of giant spider that hunts in packs. And all because the Russian government paid us to do it. Once again, fuck you, Russia.

THE ARENA
Understand, viewers, that we wouldn't have touched the fallout-devestated France with a ten-foot barge pole in most other circumstances. That thing is locked in a perpetual state of nuclear winter, where even the manliest of men fear to tread. But Russia gave us an ultimatum - accept $10 trillion to pay for the damages to Malibu, or get eaten by their giant spiders. And frankly, we'd take a ruined, ice-covered ghost city filled with nooks, crannies and glowing lake over giant spiders any day.

So yes, we let them blackmail us into choosing a battleground that would suit their competitor.

Seriously, fuck you, Russia.

So in the end, it's down to you, voters! Will it be the Roided-up Reptile with serious anger issues? or will it be the Awful Arachnids with their deadly venom and pack-hunting skills? We here at GaiaCorp are begging it won't be the fucking spiders, but until that time, all Mann Co. products are 45% off to all lucky voters, as are our patented Gaiacorp Spider-Proof Ponchos!

Monster Mash - Round 1 Fight 2: Mega Python vs. Mega Shark

Hello, sports fans, and welcome back to The Monster Mash 199X! I'm still Connor Hardy, and I'm reporting live from the sunny beaches of civil-war-wracked Malibu, where GaiaCorp and it's subsidaries are clearing the way for the next round of this clash of colossal creatures. And by "clearing the way", I mean "not telling anyone at all". So expect lots and lots of squished passers-by and demolished homes in...

-------

It's another scorching hot day on the shores of Malibu. And once again, despite the horrific civil war taking place in the centre of the county, a mere few hundred miles or so from this beach, the tourists still come in droves to sample some of that genuine Sun, Sea and Sand that has become the nation's beloved cash cow. The beach is swarming with people of many different races, genders and beliefs, their mere presence transforming the once ivory-white sands into a multicoloured patchwork blanket. Some sunbathe on gaudy towels, others paddle or splash or race each other in the tropical breakers in the spirit of holidaymakers looking for a good ol' time everywhere.

Nobody is aware of the impending destruction surging up from the depths towards them.

Or, indeed, to the monstrosity curled up in the trees behind them.

"Raja perkasa yang membersihkan tanah kami orang-orang berdosa dan kekerasan, menerima penawaran ilahi kami kepadamu!"

Raja the Mega Python is having the time of his life. It's a blisteringly hot day at over 97 degrees Farenheit, the sand beneath him is insultingly soft and a large team of altar boys dressed in purple are clambering all over his coils like an ant colony fashion disaster, scrubbing his scales and the bits in between with car sponges and holy water. It's like an all-over tongue bath without the expense or awkwardness. The supersized serpent's eyes stare vacantly into space, and his subway train of a body heaves gently with respiration - the God of the Indian Vatican is dozing, content with his lot in life and the comforts that come with it.

The scent of spices hit his nostrils, and the collosal constrictor swivels his eyes round to focus on the source - an entire elephant, spit roasted a golden-brown, is being pushed in front of him on a golden platter by a team of priests in ceremonial robes. The head priest in his funny ice cream cone hat chants in his native language as the meal comes within range, but Raja couldn't care less about him at the moment. As idly as one takes a mint from the counter of a restaurant whose nationality should be pretty obvious from the metaphor, the snake picks up the savoury treat in his jaws before throwing his head back, tossing the food to the back of his throat before swallowing it whole. The priests strike up a psalm in gratitude as, with a satisfied rumble, the Mega Python lowers his head back to the sand, intent on finishing his nap.

It isn't long, however, before his jaws pick up the vibrations of unfamiliar movement.

Glassy eyes swivelling round once again, the oversized ophidavian lifts his ponderous skull to focus on the scenery in front of him. His eyesight is far keener than that of his contemporary cousins, but the harsh glare of the sunlight means that, for a while, he has trouble making out exactly what's wrong with the sparkling sands and crystal waters ahead of him. But as his eyes adjust, he sees that the water is foaming in an odd way, and that the human tourists once lounging around are stampeding up the beach and away from the water, screaming in abject terror. Many trip over the sand and are trampled in the rush, and almost all abandon their towels, lunches and parasols in their haste to escape. It's a multicoloured tidal wave of panic.

Raja flicks out his tongue, trying to sense the force behind this panic. His priests have stopped chanting and are turned towards the beach, faces drawn. The altar boys are all frozen mid-scrub, and hunker down upon their deity's massive body, eyes wide with fear. For a moment, nothing rears it's head to confront the Ophidavian Ogilarch.

And then a massive fuck-off Megalodon bursts out of the water.

Tiburon the Mega Shark wheezes like a fat man trying to compete in the London Marathon as it flops onto the shallows, tail fin churning the depths behind it. It's not entirely sure why it woke up somewhere other than it's usual tank this morning, but it's nose told it there was a swarm of tasty morsels just a few miles from here, and what shark in their right mind disobeyed the call of food? And thus it had swam like a rocket-powered jetbike towards the shores of Malibu until, owing to the fact that sharks don't have brakes, it surged up onto the sands into the air, gulping down a small yacht as it went. Eyes of black satin roll in it's head as it tries to focus on the swarm of meat running away from it, and with a throaty growl the collosal carcharodon begins to shuffle up the sands after its lunch, pectoral fins heaving the bloated mass onto dry land.

Raja can see the massive shark hauling itself onto the sands, and does not approve of this at all. It was just starting to doze off on the lovely warm sands in the scorching sunshine, and there is no way it's going to let some overgrown sardine just waltz in and interrupt it's "saya waktu" as it's subjects call it. So enraged is the sacred serpent at having it's pampering session interupted that it doesn't even heed the screams of it's own retreating priests as they flee to the undergrowth from the supposed sea demon, instead issuing a screech of challenge as it rears up and slides out of the trees to confront it's foe. Altar boys tumble off it's coils onto the sand, onto the grass and onto each other as the furious Mega Python emerges into the sunlight of Malibu.

And so, Tiburon gets the shock of it's life when a 21-metre snake appears in front of it, jaws agape and hissing like someone just stepped onto a gas main's tail.

There's a considerable pause as the two competitors size each other up. The Mega Python sways back and forth like a drunken boxer insisting that no, he's still good to drive, shut your ugly face, all the while shifting its ponderous coils to gain more purchase on the terrain in the event things go badly wrong for it. The Mega Shark in response, lets out a rattling bellow as rotten air is forced from it's primitive, genetically enhanced lung, it's considerable bulk rocking in the sway as it beats its tail and arches its back in threat. It's the classical mexican standoff, except with a lot more dust clouds and churning ocean as the two amphibious beasts square off on the rapidly-depopulating shores, the tourists deciding that a giant shark and a giant snake is too much excitement for one day.

Then Raja suddenly jinxes to the side, instead of lunging straight forward as snakes are usually wont to do. Bewildered, Tiburon twists around, trying to get itself back into position so as to block any incoming strikes with it's massive, toothy jaw. But a shark on land doesn't have the best of turning circles, and the supersized shark leaves it's scaled hide open to attack - an opening which the Indian contender is quick to take advantage of. Darting forward, the supersized snake rams his head into the Megalodon's side, uncountable tonnes of flesh striking like a rocket-powered battering ram, and the aquatic abomination roars with pain and confusion as it rolls onto it's side, tail thrashing madly as it tries to right itself.

No dice. Almost instantaneously, a set of sharp, toothy jaws bite down on the Mega Shark's throat - nowhere enough to cut off  breathing, but enough to cut through the scaled flesh and grip on tight. Pain rachets through the fearsome fish's mind as blood spurts from the wound into the shallows, staining the waters red, and a grackled squawk escaped from the toothy maw. Ignoring the pained writhing, the Mega Python tightens it's grip on the shark's neck as it begins to shift it's body forwards, preparing to wind it's coils around the hapless Tiburon and crush the life from the already-floundering barrel body. The collosal constrictor supresses a chuckle of triumph - this would be over before-

PAIN PAIN PAIN PAIN PAIN

Yeah, that's proof that when you have a body that's longer than most subway trains, you ought to remember to keep an eye on it. In a skill of flexibility that the average gymnast would murder our top GaiaCorp's scientists to have, the cruel carcharodon has just twisted around and sank it's teeth into Raja's body, serrated teeth slicing into the flesh like knives through butter. The oversized ophidavian's eyes widen in shock and pain as, for the first time in it's admittedly short yet extremely hedonistic life, it finds that it's dealing with an opponent that isn't just going to kneel down and let itself be killed like all the other sacrifices. Tiburon is going to fight back, something that up until now the snake has never dealt with before.

The Mega Shark knows it can't breathe very well with a mouthful of snake on dry land, but there's no way it's going to let go now it's managed to get a grip on it's foe. Likewise, the Mega Python is not going to relinquish it's stranglehold on the shark's throat while it has it. The two beasts struggle and writhe on the sand, seeking some opening where they can utilize their current position to gain an advantage over their opponent, but neither willing to unhinge their jaws for any reason. The result is a tangle of fins and coils that bowls across the landscape, crushing trees and the few unfortunate tourists who haven't yet abandoned the beach, leaving red smears across the sand.

A row of houses stands on the edge of the beach, perfect for those tourists who don't want to spend effort in walking or petrol in driving to their favourite patch of sand. Within seconds, however, the thrashing monsters have ploughes straight through the line of bleached-white, high-demand villas like a child kicking down his baby brother's sandcastle

The battle is raging inland...

Meanwhile, the Malibu Mainland is having problems of it's own.

Yeah, some jackoff at Sector 7G thought it would be "a right larf" to let the Vietnamese entrants, Quỷ the Mega Piranha, out of their tank into the Malibu Creek. These things grow as big as your average great white shark, and are just as ruthless as them crazy Victorians said they were before we discovered that hey, some of their relatives eat fruit, isn't that just darling? And now they're ruining political relations by making snacks of the soldiers that patrol this Demilitarized Zone, leaping out of the water to snap up panicking guardsmen like meaty popcorn. Also, despite the ridiculous amount of gunfire being aimed at their way, the freakish fish just shrug the bullets off as though it's a stiff breeze playing through their fins.

I swear, when we find the guy who managed to get his mitts on the door codes, we're firing his ass so hard he won't be able to sit down without applying liberal amounts of soothing cream.

...Hey, what's that noise?

It's coming here awfully fa-

OH SHIT

In the blink of an eye, Raja and Tiburon tumble onto the scene, their titanic forms crushing the tree line and ploughing straight through the wire fence barricades set up by both factions of Malibu's goverment to protect the nature reserve from their little spat. The Mega Piranha don't stand a chance - they don't even have time to shriek before the massive bulks are on top of them, crushing their fishy bones and bursting their bodies like carnivorous balloons. As the combatants of today's fight send the soldiers scattering away from their scrap (try saying that ten times fast!), all that remains of Old Vietnam's entry into the Monster Mash are a shoal of flattened fishcakes.

Ladies and gentlemen, we apologize for the untimely demise of Quỷ. Those who placed bets on these plucky piscenes, please make your way to the betting booths for your refund.

...Anyway.

The shock of the cold water is a surprise to Raja, and the ruthless reptile is forced to let go of the shark's throat. Sensing that it now has the advantage, Tiburon also lets go of the serpent's coils, pivoting round upon one fin and lashing out with it's tail like a sober boxer going for the K.O. haymaker that will ensure another million dollars in the bank account. The snake is unprepared for the attack, and the tail catches it a terrific dinger across the chops, sending it careening into the shallows of the river in a spray of foam that washes up the banks.

When the water stops churning, the snake doesn't move.

As in, at all.

It just lies there, motionless.

Tiburon stares at the unmoving body for a while. Then it gives a croaking bellow of triumph. It's powerful senses that would normally allow it to detect the heartbeat and nerve signals of prey are dulled in open air, but from where it stands the Mega Shark is confident that it cannot sense any signs of life from the pile of scales and muscle lying half-in and half-out of the river like a discarded skipping rope that nobody wants. The pugilistic python is out for the count, and America's Defender of the Oceans is ready to finish the job. Snake meat is apparently very tasty, according to the president, and it's gills are starting to burn from spending so long out of the water. The shark is going to make this quick, and then head off downstream for home and rest.

With a growl, the mega-sized Megalodon shuffled foward on it's fins, ready to-

The ticked-off Titanoboa moves. One minute, it's lying in the Malibu Creek. The next, it's wound itself around Tiburon like an enrage hosepipe before the overblown fish can react. Startled, the supersized shark roars in pain and terror as the mighty coils tighten around it's barrel body, the Indian snake god not even registering the scraping of rough scales against it's underside as it gets to work. With a snarl, the Mega Python shifts it's body, and before the bewildered Tiburon knows what the deuce is going on, it's being rolled like a barrel across the stream bed until-

CRASH

Oh, yes, I forgot to mention? You know that Malibu Dam thing? Yeah, that got taken down because the fractured government couldn't make the income to upkeep it. In the end, they just kind of left it to gather dust, not doing much of anything. It's full of rot and mold and rust and other nasty things. Malibu Lake has turned stagnant from neglect. Both it and the damn mark the end of the Demilitarized Zone, where anything goes and you can get shot for a thousand different reasons. And our Monster Mash contestants have just ploughed straight through it.

South Malibu, meet several thousand gallons of water.

How tragic.

...

...yeah, that's all very well, but what about-?

Hissing in triumph, Raja the Mega Python uncoils from the bitten, bleeding and crushed form of Tiburon, letting the bloodied carcass sink to the sea to join it's comrade Dinoshark as hagfish chow. The sacred serpent may have spent most of it's admittedly short life being waited on hand and foot, but that doesn't mean it doesn't know how to fight. And fight is exactly what it has done - for all it's massive teeth and Mother-Nature-defying land-crawling, the Mega Shark was just too slow and too stupid compared to the far swifter giant constrictor. A sad day for marine life across the globe.

Exhausted but triumphant, the Indian Vatican's perverted take on Yaweh turns and swims back to shore, where a gaggle of priests and alter boys are nervously emerging from their hideaways.

WINNER: MEGA PYTHON!

Fortunately, we here at GaiaCorp are nothing if not stinking rich - perhaps they might accept a few thou from us? Oops, hang on, that's their president on the line...
